I reload handgun ammo only, till now. Started loading AR15. I've always gotten away with a kinetic hammer but it doesn't work well on 223's. Don't need to pull a lot of bullets. What is the cheapest and most effective tool to buy, cam lock or collet type an what brand? All my stuff is Lee, which i am very happy with.

I have the RCBS and Hornady Cam Lock.
They both work great, but the Rcbs is a little harder to find collets for some calibers. That's the only reason I bought the Cam lock.
I use the RCBS more because I have more collets for it, but I think either is fine.

I use the Hornady Cam-loc puller. Once it's set its really fast since all you have to do is raise and lower a lever. Both work just fine, both require the proper size collet to work. If you not going to be saving the bullet a pair of wire strippers work good for grabbing the bullet for extraction.

I had 50 bullets to pull and decided the hammer was not going to cut it. I bought the Hornady CAM lock with the appropriate collet. It pulled the bullets quickly and easily. Super east to setup and adjust. Easy to use.

For cheap and easy, you could use a pair of wire cutters:
- Take the die out of your single stage press
- Put a round in the shell holder
- Raise the ram so the bullet is above the hole in the top of the press
- Pinch the bullet with the wire cutters
- Lower the ram
The wire cutters will rest on the top of the press and the downward ram will pull the case down and off the bullet. I used my single stage press for this.

I like my RCBS puller.

I like my RCBS hammer puller, but, after a lot of rounds, it broke! they replaced it, but I got so tired of whacking it, the moment I saw your post about the Grip-N-Pull, I bought one! Until today, I didn't even know such a thing existed! Don't need it presently, but when/if I do again, I'm set. The only thing I'll use my whacker for, is if I need to pull a bunch of wadcutters. Thanx for the recommendtion!

I have a Forster and Hornady collet type bullet puller. I find both work good. I also have a hammer style RCBS bullet puller. I find the hammer style good for when you seat a bullet a little too deep. A few light taps and you can then reseat the bullet without completely pulling it. Otherwise I use the collet style ones.

Before you pull any rifle bullet , be sure and break the crimp by seating the bullet just a tenth of an inch deeper . I pulled 500 30-06 - WWII machine gun ammo with a "hammer Puller " ... breaking the military crimp and sealed bullet made all the difference in the world . 4 whacks on a solid surface usually had the 30 cal AP bullet out ... I still have empty primed brass from that lot .

Once you know the "Trick" ... pulling is easy !

I have both the RCBS Kinetic puller and their Collet type puller. The collet puller works well with long rifle bullets. Not so well wit pistol bullets.

I ended up with both the RCBS mentioned above and the CamLoc puller. I liked the CamLoc best cause once you set it you get repeatable results evert time as it will stay in adjustment and flipping up the handle releases the bullet. The RCBS went to another on this forum shortly after I purchased the CamLoc. I considered the one made for the Coax press with the universal fingers but thought it might damage the bullets more.

I am with Weekendreloader on using pliers to pull bullets except I use wire stripper pliers instead of wire cutters. This leaves four small pits on the bullet which does not harm accuracy much if at all.

O.K. Update...I ordered one, and it was paid by PayPal on Jan. 17. Claimed they'd send a confirmation/order number by email. Ordered through my wife's PayPal account. I got a confirmation the order had been received, but my wife hasn't received the confirmation and order # promised. Emailed them 1/30, but, no response, and the phone number listed has been disconnected.

RCBS is who you called? Their 800 number worked fine for me five minutes ago.

Just on 45acp mind you, but I did a casual test here a while ago and if memory serves pulling bullets with a hammer required same number of whacks whether crimped or not. Have no clue about rifle.

No...RCBS doesn't sell the Grip-N-Pull. If it was them, no doubt I would have received prompt responses. Phone number listed at PayPal goes to an answering machine.
Too funny.....if you miss one post in a thread, it screws up everything. Totally missed Himfeld's post somehow.

I hate to even mention how I pull bullets......people come out of the woodwork to attack it although I've been using it now for 45 years with no problems....
Recently I was asked to document it on Castboolits.....against my better judgment I did.......and even improved on it..... "Pipe kinetic bullet puller" thread......won't break as easy as the commercial plastic ones.;)

Update...BEWARE! Ordered puller, was charged a different amount from the one on the site, did receive a confirmation number. Paid 1/17/24, emailed for further info promised on 1/30, no response. Website phone number disconnected, two business addresses given...Utah and Idaho. Last number from a strange area code; not responsive to voice message inquiry. I think I may have been scammed! Caveat Emptor!
