Search on in Texas for Bank Robbers
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
November 5, 2004

RICHARDSON, Texas (AP) -- A group of heavily armed robbers held up a bank, then eluded police during a chase marked by gunfire, several carjackings and at least one crash, authorities said.

The robbers, toting automatic weapons, belong to a violent gang that has committed dozens of crimes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, authorities said.

One officer was slightly wounded by glass after a bullet shattered a car window, and a motorist suffered minor injuries in the wreck during the chase, said Richardson police Sgt. Kevin Perlich.

He said officers didn't return fire during the chase, during which five police cars were damaged.

Several carjacked vehicles were later abandoned. Police believe the last vehicle was taken in Wiley, about 15 miles northeast of Richardson.

Police were searching for at least three suspects in suburbs north of Dallas. Among them were two 31-year-old men whose names police believe they know, FBI spokeswoman Lori Bailey said.

Police were seeking warrants on the men late Thursday on charges of aggravated robbery and attempted capital murder, Perlich said.

Authorities believe the men are members of a criminal group tied to nine area bank robberies since 2002 and as many as 60 other armed robberies.

``They have been brazen and aggressive since day one,'' Bailey said.

Authorities said it was unclear if any money was taken from the American First National Bank in Richardson.
