Store owner shoots bank bandits in Arizona

By:Norb Franz, Macomb Daily Staff Writer April 06, 2003

Two men accused of robbing an Eastpointe bank are in an Arizona hospital after a pawn shop manager took justice into his own hands.
Both men are among the suspects in the Feb. 25 "take over" robbery of First State Bank on 10 Mile Road. Three masked bandits, armed with assault rifles and handguns, jumped over a counter and took an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Acting on a tip from a witness, Eastpointe and Roseville police arrested 22-year-old Christopher Louis Barnes of Detroit later that day. He was charged with bank robbery and using a firearm during a felony, and faces up to 20 years in prison.

Brian DeWayne Ali and Demetries Terrell Tindall were subsequently named in federal warrants for the Eastpointe heist. Investigators believe both men fled Michigan the day after the bank robbery.

Their alleged crime spree came to a stunning halt last week, law enforcement officials said.

In the early afternoon of March 27, two men toting guns tried to rob a pawn shop in Phoenix, Ariz. Robert Casey, supervisory agent of the FBI's Macomb County bureau, said the store manager reached for a .357 Magnum handgun, shot Ali in the face and Tindall in the back.

Both robbers managed to get out of the store. One culprit unsuccessfully tried to carjack a woman, police said.

Both men collapsed, and police arrested them moments later. They remain in critical condition.

Using national crime databases, police matched the fingerprints of the two injured suspects to determine their identity and learn that both were wanted in Michigan for the Eastpointe bank heist.

"Obviously these were two dangerous individuals who were going to live a lifestyle by robbing," Casey said.

Officials have not yet determined if Ali and Tindall committed other crimes while headed west.

The bandits in the Eastpointe heist also may have robbed a Huntington Bank in St. Clair Shores in January, Casey said.

"They're all in custody, and that's what counts. It takes dangerous people off the streets," said Eastpointe Detective Sgt. Richard Hardy.

If Ali and Tindall survive their gunshots, they likely would be prosecuted in Arizona before law enforcement officials in Michigan seek their extradition.
