I reloaded some .223 cartridges with Hornady 52 gr. A-Max bullets. Loading 24.3 grs of H322 powder, 3200 fps. About 1/2 way through loading the bullets, I noticed on the box, "1-14 Twist". My Rem. rifle has a 1-12 twist, no big deal to shoot these bullets at these speeds, correct? I could maybe see if I had them loaded at Warp speed, but they aren't. Thanks!

I suspect the 1 in 14 is a minimum twist recommended. Might be the optimum twist. Bottom line is 1 in 12 will shoot those 52 Gr bullets just fine.

My 1 in 14 twist .222 Mag is really iffy with anything over 55 Grs.

To add to the confusion......

I have a high milage AR service rifle with a 6 1/2 to 1 twist. When I had this rifle built, I had dreams of shooting 90 gr Bergers at a 1000. Since that time, I have learned 80 gr SMK's will make a 1000.

The high milage AR has been reduced to being a loaner rifle and the rifle I use for reduced matches. I don't want to waste my Kreiger barrel on short little matches. The point is I shoot 52 or 53 gr SMK's out of my 6 1/2 to 1 barrel with no ill effects. I win a match once in awhile and always in the money.

Hi. It's nothing to worry about. Typical .223 twists are 1 in 12.
24.3 grs of H322 is over max for a 53 grain bullet. Only by .8 though. .5 over for a 50 grain bullet. Not enough to worry about. Where did you find the data?

52gr A-Max sing out of my 26" 1-9 twist 223...as well as my 1-14 twist 22-250. The 223 likes somewhere in the 25.8-26.2gr range of Varget, while the 22-250 is (surprise) 38.0gr H380.
