What are some accurate, but fairly inexpensive 223 bullets for plinking? What weight? Softpoint, hollow point, FMJ? Boat tail?

Planning to use an AR at a range of about 100-300 yards.

The bullet weight would somewhat depend on the rate of twist in your barrel. The bullets in the high 60 grain weights and above need a slower rate of twist. Depending on how much you are going to shoot, I have never gone wrong with anything by Hornady. If you want to save more, Midway sells Remington and Winchester in a variety of weights. I have always been happy with a standard flat base bullet in the 50 to 55 grain range. To a point, you have to experiment to see what your gun likes. Different guns, different preferences.

A slower rate of twist is 1:12 vs. 1:9, right?


And for plinking do I just want FMJ? Or should I get soft point or hollow point?

My CZ527 has a 1:12 twist and LOVES winchester 64gr power points. They run about $8 a hundred and shoot really well out to 300 yards.

Midway Dogtown Bullets aint too bad. Not quite as cheap as the Winchesters, but IMHO much more accurate.
