I do have a rather innocuous black on white "Criminals Prefer Unarmed Victims" on my (white) car. It gets the point across without seeming confrontational.
As a side note, I haven't been tail-gated for more than five consecutive seconds since I put in on.

Oh, man, that is just what I need. I hate when people tailgate me. This is more civilized and subtle than "Don't Tailgate Me Or I'll Flick A Booger On Your Windshield".
