On Monday at about 1:35 p.m. a homeowner arrived at his residence in the 400 block of Brittany Ave.

He entered his home and was almost immediately confronted by a burglar who pointed a gun at the victim and ordered him to the ground. The suspect then ordered the victim to crawl to the bathroom at the end of the hall and remain at that location while the suspect continued to burglarize the residence.

After a short time the suspect returned to the victim's location and placed a gun to his head. The victim believed he was about to be shot and he turned his head as the gun discharged. He then jumped to his feet and struggled with the suspect for the gun.

During this struggle the victim sustained two gunshot wounds to his upper body but managed to wrestle the gun from the suspect and fatally shoot the intruder.

The victim was transported to Renown Medical Center where he was admitted with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect was declared deceased at the scene.

The suspect has not been identified at this time. The Reno Police Department's Robbery/Homicide Unit continues to investigate the shooting.

Wow, It does pay to fight back even if unarmed.

Good for the homeowner.

After a short time the suspect returned to the victim's location and placed a gun to his head. The victim believed he was about to be shot and he turned his head as the gun discharged.
As I say every time, "I thought if you complied with the demands, the criminal wouldn't hurt you?"

I hope he will recover from his gun shot wounds okay. I am glad he took action and survived.

I hope there are no idiotic comments from a department figure head that adminishes citizens from taking action to defend themselves and recommends compliance with criminals.

hey Jeff!

Sorry, you posted your story first, I missed it somehow.
Nice to see they're are other Northern NV folks here.

Kinda interesting that this article doesn't have the usual, "Police does not advise you to fight your assailant." that usually accompany self defense shooting articles in the news.

(Just a side note, it never written as "....does not advise you to defend yourself against assailant")

edit: Btw, this it not intended to derail all LEO. Living in Toronto, I am used to read articles like that that always has that advice inside.

The suspect then ordered the victim to crawl to the bathroom at the end of the hall and remain at that location while the suspect continued to burglarize the residence.

When using the bathroom at a Class III collector buddy's house I discovered a SB shotgun under the sink while searching for a towel. I asked him about it and he states that he has a gun within reach hidden in every room.

Good for the homeowner. I hope he makes a complete recovery.

If you are serious about self defense, you should know how to perform a basic disarm.

Oh, this:
I wonder if the homeowner will go out and buy a gun now.

Uncalled-for, esp since you don't know if the homeowner is a gunowner or not. Might have a safe full of guns and was just coming home from a job where carry is prohibited.

I'm out in Monterey on vacation right now. I was checking my e mail this morning and browsing the reno news when I found that story.

As for going out and getting a gun, thats not a bad idea except it won't do any good unless you carry it all the time. Especially in this situation where you enter your house and are met by an intruder already inside. Even worse would be if the burglar had found your gun that you left in your house and met you with that.

One time we had left for an hour and when we got back the front door was ajar. I was armed with a side arm but I knew there was a couple of loaded shotguns in the house. What did I do. I called dispatch and told the operator I thought someone may be in the house and there were a couple guns in the house. Within 15 minutes a couple sheriffs deputy's showed up and they cleared the house. Turned out to be that the door latch had just broke when the wife pulled the door closed on the way out. The sheriff's said I did the right thing in calling them. I know they got an adrenalin rush clearing the house with flashlights and sidearms drawn. No way am I possibly going up against a shotgun with only a revolver. Now it's policy when we leave that the shot-ties get locked in the safe.

That homeowner is awesome. I hope he makes a full and quick recovery.

I also really hope he's okay psychologically (sorry, I'm a psych. major). Having to kill another person in a high-stress situation can't possibly be fun. :(

[sarcasm]
the victim... ...managed to wrestle the gun from the suspect and fatally shoot the intruder.
And from your friendly Anti - "See! We told you - have a gun, have it taken away and be killed by it![/sarcasm]

This just reinforces my belief of carry everytime you walk out the door, I'm glad this guy came out on top of this situation maybe wounded but alive to see the family again.

"I hope there are no idiotic comments from a department figure head that adminishes citizens from taking action to defend themselves and recommends compliance with criminals."
What difference does it make what some politician in a Polizei Oberfuehrer uniform (as opposed to a real street cop) says? Does anybody actually listen to those morons or take them seriously?

Shot 2x fighting for pistol, kept on fighting and proceeded to show it actualy did have plenty of stopping power on the perp. I guess shot placement counts :D Glad he didn't later die from his wounds.

Why did this degenerate into a slam on the authorities"? Another thug is dead! Let us celebrate! This "victim" decided that he was not going to go quietly. Forget the other stuff and applaud this man. He is an unwilling hero.

Awesome story...Glad to hear his woulds are non life-threatening and the POS is no longer breathing.

As someone stated before!!!
