In a recent thread started by KiltedClaymore, he mentioned about how many neighbors know there is a gun in your house.

It got me thinking and wondering if people know you own a gun or even multiple guns, does that make you a bigger target for burglaries when NO ONE is home? I know criminals would love to score guns and rifles when breaking into an empty house.

But the key being empty house.

How do they know when it is empty? Many of us have large dogs and monitored alarms. They also have to find the safe, and then figure out how to open it. Even a $100 gun cabinet bolted to the walls in a corner of a closet is going to take some major effort and may even be impossible for the tool less robber to crack.

Layered defense
1) Good Doors
2) Good locks
3) Alarm system
4) Large Dogs
5) Gun Safe
6) #5 hidden if possible
7) #5 bolted to floor or wall if possible
8) HO Policy that covers total value of all firearms.

Defense in layers is the only secure defense.
Also everyone with more than $1K in firearms should check their HO policy. Many policies will require a separate rider to cover large # of firearms.

Its a problem here

We don't have a lot of break in's in my area and those who do tend to get caught quickly but guns is always a safe bet to be picked up if they can find them. I need another dog but if I am not home the dog isn't either, my only defense now is keeping the radio on in my shop and the extra vehicles in the driveway when we aren't here. No alarm and no lock is going to stop somebody from breaking in if he is determined, especially if you have a patio door facing front. The good thing is if my neighbor knows I'll be away for awhile they will keep an eye on the place and come over if they see a strange car in the driveway. I do the same for them.
