Burglars claim to be police officers, rob home

People are suckers for Police these days.

If a plainclothes knocks on your door, call 911. They will be able to verify the legitimacy of these orficers. Yell through the door that you won't open it until you see a Uniformed Patrol officer and that you're on the phone with 911.

They probably were cops...

...I see Crockett and Tubbs came out of retirement.
I'm sure they were just "borrowing" it to chase down that cartel dealer they tracked to Seattle.

It's funny, this is stuff we see in movies all the time. If someone tried to pull "movie stuff" we'd see these kind of happenings all the time. Can you imagine some of the movie scenarios played out in real life?

Hmm, maybe I'll start a new thread rather than hijack this one...

BTW: My post is not to knock any police officers.

They are not burglars...they are robbers. A fine distinction perhaps.

Well in theory that's a good idea. But in practice, the 911 operator will most likely not have a clue if the plainclothes officers at the door are legitimate or not.

Much of the country is dispatched from consolidated 911 answering centers and in many cases calls are forwarded to the responsible agency. The chances of a 911 operator knowing in advance that detectives are out knocking on your door are pretty small in most cases. The 911 operator can send a uniformed officer but he/she will most likely be unable to verify who is at your door.

Jeff- That's great, I'll just wait with the door closed untill she connects me with someone who CAN verify these guys. Maybe I'll ask the guys outside who they claim to work for, and tell the 911 gal to give me someone over there NOW, it's an emergency. Be prepared for it to take a while.

I remember a gang of guys were doing this in Dallas a couple of months back. I don't recall if they ever got caught.

I think criminals may be learning a new tactic to lessen the chance of getting shot while breaking into a home. Scary.

I remember reading about the gang that was doing that down in Texas. This is probably one of the hardest scenarious to look at. In most cases I would just start shooting, but when you don't know what do you do???

The "disguise" trick seems to be becoming more common. A local man here was attacked in his garage by a man wearing a gas co. shirt pretending to be a meter reader recently.

Most detectives in my department would be more than happy to wait while one of us responded to “verify†their status for you.

Main reason being that if a detective or investigator is just knocking on a door it’s more or less a follow up or a knock and talk any way and not a super duper pressing issue. If that was the case they would have us do it.

It seems to me that if you're in a situation that permits a chat with the police/criminals outside the door, a good test would be to ask them to turn on their blue lights/sirens briefly. Anything can be faked I suppose, but this would be better than trusting "Police, open up."

Just express your concern to them thru the door explain to them that you are aware of people posing as cops so others will open up their homes and then getting robbed.

The Investigators will most likely just wait while a uniform is dispatched to the scene for your benefit.

But I think something is missing here that needs discussion.

In the majority of jurisdictions plain-clothes cops won’t answer calls due to this very problem. A plain-clothes officer won’t (just) stop by a house for no reason. If you do get a knock at your door and it’s a plain-clothes cop asking to speak with you it’s almost certainly about something you are aware of, a report you had taken, something you previously called about or something that happened that you maybe witnessed or something in your neighborhood. So he or she will be there about something you previously called about.

Most of our investigators if they are doing follow ups will call you on the phone and will either do it by phone, ask you when a good time to come by will be or just ask you to come by the office at your earliest convenience.

If an unannounced cold call is made its usually made by us, in uniform in a marked car.
