It turns out the perps are members of MS-13 and the robbery was part of their initiation. The van belonged to Los Grand Vato the head of their chapter.

And a month later the perps return this time with a baseball bat and a friend.

They beat this gent to a bloody pulp, rape his wife, and then rob his house. Police arrive hours later when his wife crawls to a neighbor's house, nude beaten and bloody, to report the assault and murder....

Are you advocating that he should have surrendered? Perhaps offered to help them load the van?

Software applies here as well folks.

If you are hit by burglars, the odds are great you will get hit again, and again and...

We share one should take preventive measures, not go where trouble is, leave when trouble shows up, and have skill sets to deal with trouble if they cannot evade.

Don't be prey, think like a criminal - Mentors.

You get burglarized, and the criminals wait until items are replaced. They know a person will file a claim, and the Insurance Co may issue a check, or replace the items themselves, or both.

So criminals come back.
Repeat.

There exists various Models of Criminals and there exists a hierarchy if you will.
One often occurrence is a home is burglarized, and it appears to be kids doing a "grab and run".
No, their job was to case the home and report back. Sure they took some stuff, but...

Your items are sold, before they are stolen. It is just a matter of stealing them to provide them , to waiting buyers.

So the kids steal calendars, day planners - and know schedules.
When they were inside they also looked for guns, jewelry, coin collections, silver ware, entertainment, tools...where these might be.

They report this, and the next time you are hit , more seasoned Models of Criminals hit you.
These criminals have experiences and skill sets, and use these to steal your items.
They may choose to bring a metal detector , which is a proven tool for finding hiding places for criminals, LEOs, and Family members of the deceased family member.

Again, these items get replaced and the criminals wait to hit you again.

If you are ever "hit" ,and I don't care if it was just a rock being thrown the window, you should have alarms going off in your gut.
Someone is casing , and checking response times.
It might be you they are targeting, or your neighbor, or someone across town. Still alarms should be going off in your gut someone is casing and getting prep work done.

Re: Original post.

I am really angry and sad this event took the turn it did.
Being honest, it hits close to home with me, and I get the shivers thinking about some things in my past.

This is S&T, so I have shared some things about Software that apply to the second , tragic event.

What other Software could have been implemented?

Um you realize the guy talking about MS13 was just blowing smoke right?

To avoid getting my prints and DNA in the van and to avoid being charged with burglary of a motor vehicle, I'd be sorely tempted to put her in drive, wedge a rock or other object against the accelerator, and just let her roll, waving to the Three Stooges as they run after her and into the arms of arriving PD
Or they might just attack you

Quite Frankly Jeff The response I would like to make to your question would get me kicked off here. But I will take the high road.

sm knows the score.

My house was hit 15 years ago, 3 times by the same repeat offender. If I had caught him in my house, it would have been his last offense. He's in jail now for raping a 12 year old who he had made his crack whore.

Jimbo: "Or they might just attack you"

God help them if they did, but they'd also have to see me first. And seeing as how the Three Stooges left their getaway van running for me to send on a mission, I doubt they're very good at that.

Considering that we know nothing about the homeowner except that he's a laid off banker, isn't it kind of silly to imply he should have attacked the intruders? Guns are not the solution to every human problem, despite what one liners you might hear in an action adventure movie or read on the internet. We don't even know if the homeowner owned a gun. Are you seriously recommending that he attack, knowing absolutely noting about the homeowner?

Or are you just falling to into the action/adventure movie one liner syndrome?

sm does know the score. sm, by the way, that thing master blaster said didn't really happen - but you make valid points.

master blaster, honestly, do you think a gang is less likely to retaliate if you kill their members than if you steal their van??
