Does anyone have any experience yet with the Bushmaster .308 rifles? They look interesting if a bit pricey. But then, in this Commonwealth, it seems that every firearm is pricey.
I haven't shot one but reports of them are good on AR15.com. I have handled one and the quality is top notch and the design clever and practical. If the AWB sunsets it might not have as much of an edge over it's competition but from what reports have been saying about accuracy it will still be the leader of it's class and the only one with ambidexterous controls.
I want one, can you tell I have other guns in line first though.
Thanks for the in-depth report! I like the looks and feel of the AR-series rifles and was hoping that this rifle would turn out well. Looks like it did.
I am thinking about the 20" barrelled version myself. But it seems that the 16" barrel is plenty accurate.
Both 16" and 20" barrels are straight 0.740" profile.
There will be some velocity drop from the 16" barrel compared to the 20" barrel. I beleive, however, that the .308 round is much less velocity sensitive for effective terminal ballistics than the .223 round.
The BAR-10 uses unmodified FAL mags - inch or metric.
Thermold FAL mags will not work because of a molded-in ridge around the mag which interferes with insertion into the BAR-10 mag well.
Bushmaster has found some problems with older Israeli mags (weak springs).
I have used metric steel and aluminum mags in mine with no problems. One mag was hard to take out of the mag well, but that was solved by filing a little off the locking lug on the back of the mag.
Bushmaster current 308s are like the DPMS AR10 styled rifles and do not take FAL mags. The Bushmaster BAR which is the RRA LAR8 takes FAL mags. So the new production Bushmaster AR 10 are nothing like the the old Bushmaster BAR. Don't confuse them or you will end up with the wrong mags!
Wow, an antique thread revival.
I do however own one of the old BAR-10 rifles that take Fal mags and I am very pleased with it. I have had the rifle for several years now and it is one of my favorite hunting guns.
