I was looking at the ORC (5.56) on the Cabelas website. I was wondering now that bushmaster has moved, if you buy a bushmaster are you still getting a proprietary rifle made by busmaster or is someone else making the rifles and putting "bushmaster" on the rifles? If you ordered one from a big store like Cabelas would you be getting a Maine product still or one of the new ones? Just curious. I have heard some Bushmaster products (308's?) are being made by someone else.

Bushmaster was bought out by Remington, just like Marlin. Ever notice how Remington's AR's look just like the Bushmasters, but with "Remington" lettering? Same gun.
Bushmaster, Remington, Marlin, DPMS and a host of others are all owned under the umbrella of the so-called Freedom Group--the not-so-sinister-sounding new name for Cerberus. There are a lot of doomsday conspiracy theories out there linking them to the ultimate antichrist figure George Soros, but I have considerable doubt.
The Bushmaster operation is no longer in Maine, but moved to another state. Go to their website and hit "contact us" and you'll see which state-I can't recall at the moment. Marlin was also moved somewhere else. DPMS made the Remington R15 and R25 for them. Don't know if DPMS and Bushmaster have consolidated operations or not. At any rate, if you can believe anything you read on internet forums, (including what you're reading now) there are a lot of complaints and horror stories about the quality of these brands since the takeover by the dastardly big corporation. I do know one person who bought a Remington 770 with no rifling in the barrel.
The old Bushmaster owner and several of the old employees have started up a new business in Windham Maine- Windham Weaponry. If you want the old Bushmaster check them out.

Windham Weaponry has been up an operating in the old Bushmaster manufacturing facility since July 2011. You can check them out at the above link and you can find their industry forum on AR15.com

I saw a DPMS Predator at Cableas the other day... Oddly enough, the Predator that I've owned for several years now has "Bushmaster" on it.
That pretty much answered any questions I had about the separation of the two companies.

There has been some, and will be more, consolidation of parts commonality and application of various economies of scale. Much of the brand identification and marketing strategies will evolve more slowly. As many different ways which there are to configure AR's, there should be marketing value in maintaining different brand images in line with subsets of product features. Thing of it like Chevy-GMC-Buick-Cadillac.

"Proprietary" generally doesn't apply to the 5.56 AR platform, with a few exceptions. Most parts for one 5.56 AR should fit just about every other AR, regardless of whose name is stamped on it. Ever notice how the Bushmaster Modular Accessories System was remarkably similar to Yankee Hill's sights, rails, etc? When it comes to the .308 AR, that's when you start getting proprietary. Bushmaster's .308 AR seems to follow the DPMS model, vice the Armalite or Rock River versions.
FWIW, I used DPMS parts in a AR I built. I will never do that again. The safety had four distinct clicks to go from safe to semi. Strangely enough, when I replaced it with a Colt safety, the problem went away....

I owned a recent Bushmaster and it was terrible - sent it back to Bushmaster and when I received it back 4 weeks later, it was the same as when I shipped it. I have to say that it left a bad taste in my mouth - will never own another one.

Rock River Arms has always been great in my eyes... on my second one now (SBR project #1, paperwork sent in 4 weeks ago).
Bushmasters are made in the same plant in Ilion as Remington now. The difference is that they try to keep from mixing up the labels assembling one. It's going to happen one day.
The Chevy - GMC analogy is correct, if you've been in the KC plant in the day, you could see Buicks, Oldsmobiles, and Pontiacs coming off the same line one after the other. The only difference was the trim and interior. Underneath, all the same.
If you've bothered to notice, since Ford sold Mazda, there's no longer a Ranger pickup next year.

I have been hearing good things about them. Seems the ticket if you like(ed) Bushmaster.
