I currently have inexpensive elastic Kolpin buttstock ammo carriers on my maverick 88 and my 16ga SxS coachgun. I was at the range yeaterday practicing tactical reloads (I guess I have watched to many clint smith videos!) and noticed that the elastic carrier was fine for the first three or four shells I pulled out but, after that is started to slide forward. I was thinking of putting a small piece of velcro tape on the underside of my stock to stop the creep. If that dosent work I'm thinking a leather carrier...any suggestions about which is best?

I use butt cuffs to the exclusion of every other manner of carrying extra ammo(on the gun). I believe it upsets the weapon balance less that carrying ammo on a sling or sidesaddle. I have used velcro with great success, but as funds permit I am replacing them with quality leather cuffs. I found some for sale on a Cowboy Shooting web site which escapes me at the moment, but if you try googling Cowboy Action Shooting or SASS (single action shooting society) I am sure you will find ways into links that provide leather butt cuffs.

Velcro sounds like a good idea.
you can get some really strong self adhesive vecro these days and just stick the one side onto your stock and then I'd stick the other side to the ammo carrier in the appropriate location then sew it to the fabric.

Elastic isn't constent or reliable, and I keep it off of any serious gun.

I took a wood 870 Police stock and drilled some holes in it, including countersinking for the bolt heads, so that I could mount a 4 round sidesaddle. It's held up very well, and is very sturdy.

If that wasn't an option, I'd buy a leather butt cuff and nail it to the stock just to be sure.

Some very good ideas here for stopping the problem of creeping forward. I have just sewn a thin nylon strap on the rear of the carrier so it wraps around the butt. Those things will creep forward so securing it in place is a good thing.

I use an elastic/synthetic cuff on my 870. I cut a hole in the bottom that will let the sling stud poke through. This does a pretty good job holding the cuff in place. I decided take it up a notch with a wrap of black cloth tape around the back end (1/2 width of the tape on the cuff, the other 1/2 on the stock). It's not pretty, but it could be a lot uglier ;)

All of the on-gun ammo carriers seem to be a compromise in one way or another.

I've use the buttstock carrier from Tactical Tailor in classes, matches, and practice, and, in my experience, it stays put. It also allows me to shoot weakside without too much pain :). It is a bit long for a shortened stock, but you can crank the straps down and make it work.
