I'm looking to get into SASS and I'd rather protect it some when throwing a gun onto a table.

Been to a match yet? If not, come out and join the fun.

The 1860 Henry is SASS legal but I have heard of some local clubs that have banned them based on stories of shooters having magazine tube detonations caused by the magazine follower tab getting snagged on a prop and snapping down on the cartridges. You might want to check with the match director of your local club.

Clubs in my area allow them but this is something to watch for.

Whoa! I have not heard of that. What club do you shoot at? Mansfield, Harvard, etc'?

I went to a match in Harvard to watch but that is about it so far. Still haven't registered a name or bought any of the required clothing yet.

I’m in South Carolina. I don’t think the “local range rule” against the 1860 is widespread but it has happened.

Most clubs don’t require SASS membership to shoot monthly matches. Don’t let that hold you back. Also, as to clothing, jeans, a long sleeved shirt (that is not a T-shirt) and some type of leather shoe or boot is all you need to satisfy the costuming requirements. Unless you plan to shoot in one of the two “costume based categories”, you are not even required to wear a hat. Cowboy boots are great for riding; for standing and walking for a few hours, not so much.

Ah, my bad. I had posted this in a local forum and for some reason I thought I was responding in that forum. It would seem that local matches are a little different up here. Dress and name was required. Definitely some interesting getups here.

Is it a shooting match or a costume party? LOL.

Been to a few SAS shoots and they are quite the conundrum...They want you to dress up in period costume......then shoot mouse fart loads out of your .45 Colt. Always thought if you were trying to be historically correct the ammunition should be as well.

Nothing prevents a competitor from using full loads or blackpowder. You can go fully authentic or you can be a total gamer. The choice is yours.

Unlike any other shooting competition, CAS is not about 'just' shooting. It's more than that and requires more from the competitors. It's more of a historical re-enactment with real bullets. Whether it's re-enactors, cowboy action shooters, living history buffs or primitive trekkers, I never understood how someone could make fun of people who put MORE effort into something than they would. All it tells me is that the person making fun is too insecure to leave the house in anything but jeans and a T-shirt.

Some folks believe that anyone who wears cowboy hats and boots is "playing dress-up", whether it's at a CAS shoot or not.

I have a Galco Butt Cuff on my SBL that I like the function and look of. It cost around $60 if I remember correctly. It's more functional than elegant but it works. I just realized that the Montana sling shown is on backwards. :p

I have a nice Uberti 1860 Henry that has some beautiful wood that I'd like to keep in good shape. I've noticed that just with general use I've scratched the buttstock some and with some effort I've repaired those scratches. I'm thinking of installing a leather sleeve on the buttstock to protect it, but am not finding a good source for one. I've found some beautiful ones online, but not really looking to pay $200-$300 for it.

Anyone have one of these on their lever actions and if so, where did you get it?
Check out Amazon or Ebay you can find some for $35 or less
