Buy gun without ammo?

Just wondering if this ammo thing is hurting gun sales, yet. I've noticed that walmart, Dunham's sports and a couple others near me have plenty guns on the rack unlike a couple months ago. But no ammo. I'm thinking if you don't have ammo to shoot why buy a gun?

I know that some have bought a new gun down here without being able to buy with a purchase. Pistols have flown off the shelves, and in many but the best funded stores some dealers have resorted to buying things they'd not previously buy just to keep stock to sell. One dealer is making baggies with a few rounds just to have something to supply to customers with a purchase.

One dealer told me in desperation one fellow bought several boxes of bullet tips online not knowing that they were not finished ammo. So we're still not out of the woods with this ammo problem, hopefully it turns around sooner than later.

Buy a gun without ammo...sure, I have done it many times. Have also done the opposite as well; bought ammo without a gun to shoot it with. If I come across a great deal on one or the other and it's something I am planning on getting eventually; it makes perfect sense even if you are putting the cart before the horse, so to speak.

There's also the affordability of not getting everything at the exact same time. I'd have probably passed up deals if I had to buy the ammo and the gun all as one expense.

Could be why my Henry sat on the LGS gun rack for 3 months with no takers. Big Boy X tactical lever gun in .45 Colt. MSRP is $1000 and Gunbroker prices are $900 to over $1200, if you can find one. LGS price was $799, plus a 5% veteran discount.

They haven't had .45 Colt on the shelf since summer. Online prices for .45 Colt are insane. Luckily, I owned three other firearms in .45 Colt and reload for it.

So I brought it home a couple of weeks ago and am super happy with it...

My father wants to buy a .357 Mag snubby, but doesn't have any .357 ammo. Of course, he's a proficient reloader and has thousands of SPP primers, powder, and plenty of lead. But, finding dies and molds and cases might be kind of tough these days.

We haven't used the layaway plan at our favorite LGS lately, but the fact that they have a layaway plan is one of the reasons they became my wife's and my favorite LGS in the first place.:)

I'd never used the layaway plan at my LGS until I spotted the Henry above. My brother uses it all the time and will put a firearm on layaway while he cosigns a used firearm with them to get the money for the one on layaway, LOL. I asked them what the terms were and they said they don't do layaway anymore due to the current market. So I had to watch and wait patiently for 3 months while trying to save up the money for the Henry. I was nervous every week when I went in to see if it was still there.

Yeppers, we have done that too. Haven't had to in a while; we aren't "rolling in dough" or anything like that, but we no longer have kids to raise and a mortgage that felt like the national debt. Besides, it's rare these days that one of us spots a gun in a gunshop that quickly turns into a "haft to have" type of gun.;)

One of the part time LEO in town was shooting with us one day and casually asked if anyone wanted a Savage in 300 WSM for $150. Asked him about it and he opens his trunk and hands it to me. It was SS with plastic stock and Lupold scope. Also had 3 Winchester ammo boxes with empty brass. Said another box of ammo was over $60 and wanted it gone. It went home with me and was on my cell to Midway for dies as I drove out of the parkimg area. Had everythimg else to reload it with already so no big deal. Also bought my first 40 because I already had saved 3K range brass and had dies.
