We are moving and I have been looking at houses over the last few weeks. Some them have 10-12 acres of land are sufficiently out of town in the county where I could set up a 100 yard range for personal use without much hassle. One of the places even has a committee investigating setting up a neighborhood range. Some of the places are in gated communities but my understanding is there a good bit of gunfire out there when the weather is nice. In any case everything I own has a dedicated silencer but the revolvers so it wont be a nuisance. If course I would check the local regs and be a friendly neighbor as much as possible.

Is there a resource for planning a home range and constructing a good back stop that any of you have used?

I used railroad ties with dirt mounded all around them. Set 1@100 yards and the other @ 200 yards. Ranged from my porch. I own the half section so one of thes days i would like to set up a 1000 yard range with a shooting platform 15' or so off the ground.

Make sure to check the covenants for properties in subdivisions/developments, even on larger land parcels. Some of them specify no discharge of firearms or hunting. It is easily overlooked when signing all the papers at closing. I have no idea if it could be legally enforced, but why take the chance.

Rule hit it. Check covenants closely. Many don't specifically preclude shooting, but do have "noise" provisions. When I finally get my acreage, I am going to hire a track hoe for a few days. I am going to build a pond and use the dirt removed for my shooting back stop.
