I'm looking to buy a new .50 cal In-Line Muzzleloader.

I really like my Thompson/Center Omega .50 cal, but I'm looking to get a break open.

I guess there is the T/C Encore, Truimph, and G2.

What do you think?

I also hear that CVA's make really accurate guns without the price of a T/C.

Does anyone know anything about CVA's?
.

Some folks like them. My personal opinion is save up a little more dinero and get a T/C. That being said I think the key to getting a bp rifle that'll shoot well is to get one with a 1 in 28" twist barrel. Don't be seduced into thinking you need to run 150grs. of powder either. 100grs. of Pyrodex and a 240grXTP in a sabot will take care of things quite well.BTDT!

I think the Traditions Vortek Ultra Light is a fine break open muzzleloader. Check out the one I have for sale on here. Even if you are not interested in buying it, check out the features of this fine weapon. Welcome to the Highroad, its a fine place to learn about guns and other related topics!

I've heard some say that CVA's are much more accurate because they have Beraga barrels.

An truth to this?

.

If you decide you want a used knight(cap, not 209) or an unfired Remington Genesis(209)...Holler at me.

I'm down sizing on nontraditional stuff...

CVA Accura V2 with 100gr Blackhorn209 and a 300gr Thor conical,
100 yards.

Another heck of a deal would be the CVA Optima. they run $225 at www.rrarms.com Real stainless steel barrel and finger removal breech plug.

Nice grouping Frontiergander.

I just purchased two (one for a friend) Thompson/Center Truimph Bone Collector .50 with Weathershield for $399 each from Cabelas. (They are usually $599 each).

For such a good price it was hard to pass up. I hope they shoot well out to 200 yards and look forward to testing them.

What bullets do you guys use for deer?

I killed my deer at an honest 100 yards this year with a Powerbelt .245 grain, it dropped after about 10 yards. My buddy who hunts says he tested a bunch of bullets and said Powerbelts were great out to 100 yards, but beyond that they got really bad.

I also went looking at the T/C lines, but left with a CVA Accura. I really like it, great trigger and barrel.

I can't get the groups Frontiergander gets yet, but I am sure that the rifle is capable of it. I haven't put a scope on mine yet and I just found out my eyes aren't what they use to be,( 20/40, 20/50 ). I did have 2 out of the holes touching at 50 yards once I got the sights adjusted.

Now I am shopping for glasses for me and a scope for it.

red rick,
Have you checked out the Nikon ProStaff series of optics?
I have one on my T/C Omega and another on a recently purchased Savage Edge .30-'06.
Good quality stuff and easily affordable.

I have only looked on the web so far. I am leaning toward the Redfield 2X7, that could change once I put it to my eye though.

I'll PM you and help you with some loads.

I like the idea of the speed loads in a shotgun shell thing on the stock...

I use Dead Center bullets, saboted 40caliber solid lead balistic tip of a thing...
They hit. Anything that'll fly straight to 200+ yards out of an inline, smack fairly good groups and still do hardcore damage beyond a shoulder is good by me.

Try the Precision Rifle Bullet(think that's the companys name) Dead Center's(that's the model I think) could be wrong....they've got some cool stuff, well it looks that way, all ive tried is the DC 40 cal saboted for a 50cal gun.

.

Geofc, I'll have to look into that Dead Center stuff. 200 yards is good with an In-line.

Have you harvested deer with it yet?

.

I use 100gr of T7 pellets(2 50gr) and a 200gr T/C Shockwave...very accurate and tight groups...not been fortunate to get a shot this fall as of yet...used 265gr Remington Hollowpoints with 80 grains of Shockey's Gold before this and they performed similarly. I have shot 5 deer with that load and only one was not DRT...that one ran 17 yards. These loads are all in a Remington 700MLS with Leupold m8-4x glass.

I also vote for the Accura .... best bang for the buck IMO. With the new barrels CVA uses it has proven to shoot nice groups. I found this one on sale at Dunhams for $299.

buy spanish

hooold on there partner, buy American or you cam move overseas when you need a job,Spanish guns from bpi (cva)are not proofed for the American market,as it is not required, inferior Steele's,no x raying barrels for safety, marginal quality control, can lead to serious concequences,so i bought amercian,an z5 omega and its a tac driver, built like a tank barrel made of 11 37 ordinance grade steele28 in bbl(for shooting 3 777 pellets),williams fire sights are standard, added a tc scope n mounts for 50 bucks,so for about 350.00 total i bought amercian quality that will last, cva apallos and others have had catistrofic failures due to soft steele and design flaws in the past, although ive had a cva for years with no problems opinions may vary, see randy wakemans cva review. o0h and break downs are just finger pinchers,as far as im concerned:cool:i get 1 in groups @150 yrd with 3 777 pellets &250 gr tc center shocwave, and this load kills cleanly on 250 lb deer at that range and out to 200 yrds

Hmm... The CVA barrels had problems in 1996 & 1997 yet the data keeps floating around the internet about the problems that existed then as if they still exist now. Not only that but CVA's have Bergara barrels on them now and are completely manufactured differently. Newer technology now verses then. Maybe some day people will let go of the incidents that occured in the late 90's and come to realize that the current CVA's are far more advanced.

The comments about killing dear and sub moa groups have no bearing whatsoever on how much the T/C is superior. The CVA can shoot just as well and the deer I've shot never said a word back and didn't know the difference.

My friend wants to buy a muzzleloader for her dad for Christmas but doesn't want to spend more then $100 to $200 since moneys tight this year.

I suggested the stainless/black CVA Optima for $249 at Cabelas.

I think CVA's are nice guns as is the Traditions Vortek which is really nice too.

I think top muzzleloaders are like top trucks, they all have slightly different features but they are all pretty solid in the end and anyone of them can satisfy your needs.
