Buying a Python. Blue or SS, 4" or 6"

As the title said, I will be buying a Python as soon as I get my bonus check, which should be in about 3-4 weeks. I’m interested in hearing what everyone thinks as far as size and Blue vs. SS. I probably won’t hunt with it, but you never know, I just might get the urge. If I did, it would be whitetail. I’m not going to carry it. I will shoot it, this will not be a safe queen, but it will be shot for fun, nothing fancy.

So what do you think? If you were going to buy one, what would you choose? If you own one (or more), what do you have, what do you use it for, and would you rather have your size/ color or would you do it differently if you were going to buy another.

Please, no “buy a S&W, Ruger, etc, and buy a Cadillac with the leftover money”.

I'd personally go for the Stainless 6" I like shiney things.....
But then again, nothing is as pretty as a royal blue Python.

Right now, regarding buying a Python, the best advice I can give is buy it. If you know where one is at for a decent price, buy it. Whether it is stainless, blued, six inch or two, if the price is reasonable, buy it. Just finding a Python for sale is difficult. Reasonably priced Pythons are a rarity these days.

If I had a choice, I'd go with a six inch blue, then a four inch blue. Found a couple up here, one six inch SA model, and a 4 inch DA, and after looking at them, decided I liked the S&W M27 better anyway. They were $700 and $850 respectively.

I didn't know that Colt made a single action Python. I thought that they were all double action. Can you please tell me a little bit more about this?

A 4" Python is a very difficult handgun to find in this area (especially for less than $1K). If you find a 4" in blue or SS for a price you can afford, buy it.

I’ve owned three Pythons and more S&W revolvers than I could count.
Blue revolvers are beautiful if you are looking for a piece to show off or collect. But if you use them and scratch them up you can’t repair the finish. If you are getting a shooter I would recommended stainless. If you scratch them up; you can buff them out like new.

I had a 6" blue Python years ago, which in the stupidity of youth, I traded off. Been kicking myself ever since.

I would go with blue - much nicer looking than stainess (IMHO), and a nice, deep black bluing job is classic.

As far as barrel length, it is almost a toss-up, but I would go with 4" for all around shooting, 6" if it is going to be used for hunting.

I have a six inch blue model and love it. If I were getting another I would get the 4 inch blue. Pythons are almost worth their weight in gold. People who have them tend to keep them, those that don't want them. Good luck finding one and an anticipitory welcome to the club.

I vote for a 6 incher since it won't get carried and possibly go hunting. As to the finish that's up to your tastes. I have both SS and blued models, but prefer the blued.

4-Inch Blue

This is the only time I'll ever recommend a blued over a stainless handgun, but stainless guns will always be around. Not so with blued Pythons. The actions I hear also are better on the blued ones.

Don't look back, and oh yes, buy a 4-incher! Almost perfect balance.

Back in the day when gun manufacturers knew what blue was & how to apply it....I'd go blue 4"...O, wait, I did I've had a 38 year old, 4" blue Python for almost a month now...and love it!

Part of the excitement of owning a Python was its rich blue lustre. I can't say the same about the stainless ones. Even the bright polish stainless Pythons made me think of nickel. Some things are just not right. I'd go blue.

Buying a Python

Everyone has a preference as to which looks better. I think the royal blue is beautiful. However the stainless is also a great looking gun. The big thing for me is the barrrel length. I would definitely go with the 6". My reason being that a big part of the gun's good looks is the rib vent and the 6" shows that off much better.

I have a 4" blued Colt KC, I will dont plan on ever letting it go. Id love to have a matching Python in Blue. The blueing is incredible on Colts. If you can get your hands on one snatch it up.

I went with a 6" SS. From the second I saw it I knew it was the one. I wouldn't be surprised (blued or SS) if the same thing happens to you.

I just bought my FIRST Python at a gun show a couple of weeks ago. It was a PERFECT NIB, never fired, 6" blued gun made in '78. It came with box and papers, and I think I got a pretty good deal at $1000 out the door. It has the most awesome finish I've seen on a handgun. NOW I have to find a good deal on a "shooter" Python in SS myself! I just can't mess that blued gun up !

Depends. If you are primarily an outdoor sportsman, then get stainless and six inch. If you are primarily a guy who wants to be armed against criminals, then blued and four inch. The longer the barrel, the less handy in a fight, and the more likely someone could grab it away from you in a scuffle. The longer barrel, though, is better for the longer shots often taken at deer, bear and boar.

A 6" blue Python is what I just bought and would suggest the same to you. To me the blue 6" Python is "the quintessential Python".
Next I would like to find a 4" blue. Had one back in the eary '70s' with the worst trigger a Colt ever had.
I don't care for SS handguns and own only two because...
I have recently passed on two SS Pythons.

one of the reasons pythons are sooo prized and cost $$$$ is because of their outstanding accuracy. Why cheat yourself out of the extra accuracy the 6" with its longer sight radius gives you?

And as was already said above me, the 6" blued is THE python. Stainless finshes you can get anywhere. Where else these days (besides perhaps S&W custom shop, and even then, maybe not) can you get a beautiful deep blue like that, where it looks like you could jump in and go for a swim?
Damn. Now I want one.
