Its one of their better guns and I like the location of the safety better than the beretta.
Buying a Taurus PT92?

Depends on what is meant by "cheap". If one meant reasonably priced, then, perhaps.
I can remember when Datsun, Volkswagon, Toyota, and Honda vehicles had that same appellation. They WERE considerably less expensive than comparable American Models, but that was all. The cars lasted, performed, and gave gas mileage that Detroit only fantasized about.
Today, cheap comes with an almost universal understanding of poor quality. That certainly isn't the case with the PT92.
FYI, the NSSF hired a firm recently, who interviewed 10,000 handgun owners about their reasons for owning a handgun, how many they own, and how many were bought new.
To some, 10,000 isn't a large number. However, political polls are often drawn from 10% that many on numerous subjects.
Funnily, 38% of the respondents owned Ruger, 33% owned S&W, 17% owned Glock, 15% owned Taurus, 14% owned Springfield, 13% owned Colt, 10% Sig Sauer, 9% Browning, and 7% Kimber. Other guns were in lesser percentages.
Funny how so many of our "experts" are so far off base with buyers actual results.
It also mentioned that less than 10% of handgun owners have a single gun. The results show that.
Have had a PT99 and two PT92s. Traded the 99 just because I got bored with it, but it was a very sweet shooter and never had a problem with it. Now regret letting it go.
I picked up my first PT92 used at Cabella's, and it was obvious why it didn't work: the previous owner didn't know jack about cleaning firearms.
A few hours and some patches and CLP later, it was shooting like a champ. My BIL liked it so much I sold it to him.
My current PT92 I also picked up used at a gun show (from a dealer). It is also as sweet a shooter as the first two PTs I owned.
No problems, no complaints.

I've had mine since 99 and the thing is an awesome shooter. 12k rounds and going. Nothing has broke or worn out yet. Very accurate as well
I just picked one up the other day. The finish good; I've heard other people compare it negatively with the Beretta, but it looks fine to me. I tried the trigger on the Beretta before buying my Taurus and the Beretta is just the tiniest bit better, but honestly the Taurus still has one of the best triggers of any of my semi autos. The only complaint I have about mine is that it would sometimes fail to feed some 147 grain gold dots that I was testing out in it. Anyone have any ideas why this may be? Other than that function was perfect with other ammo, and accuracy was very very good. Better than I can shoot anyways. Since picking it up the other day I have put about 250 rounds through it and the only problem I had was with the gold dots.

I have one I bought in 96 or 97. It went back to Taurus for a barrel problem and since then it has been perfect. A friend wants to but it and I am trying to decide whether to or not to sell it. He made me a generous offer but the damn thing shoots more accurately than my Beretta 92. I'd sell him the Beretta, but I have more mags for that one than the Taurus. What to do, what to do???

Owned a PT-100 and got rid of it because i didn't like the 40 S&W. Sold it for more than i paid for it but i did like the gun while i had it. Would probably buy another if i was looking for another falling block pistol. The safety is acutely one of the better designed safeties on any full size pistol. It gives you cocked and locked carry and a decocker when you want it. Most guns only do one of the other.
I picked one up in the early 90s after returning from overseas and leaving the military. It was my first "civilian" handgun purchase. It was my main gun for years. I do like the Taurus safety system better than the Beretta. I put 1000's of rounds through it without any problems. If I were not a 10mm convert I would not mind owning one again.
First post here. I have two pt99's. One is SS with decocker/rail bought in about 2010. THe other I bought shortly after that USED from a gentleman. It had about 1000 or less rounds through it as far as I could tell (gentleman said it was around 200, but can't verify that either way). It is the blued version without the decocker/rail. Sights are red front dot with two rear yellow dots. Love it. Only complaint is that after 1K factory rounds through it I started reloading and it was being finicky about extracting with reloads I was working up. Saw the rear sight pin fell out. When pusing on the external rear of the extractor, I could push the rear all the way in, lifting the front all the way out to the side of the slide with only moderate pressure. Got a 3-pack of the pins from taurus ordered about a week ago on their way in mail for $3 + $8.75 shipping. After ordering an extractor spring from Brownell's (i believe it was listed as for the Beretta) and installing it, I saw how little tension the old one had. Seems the guy I bought it from had left one in the chamber and had it sit in his safe for about 10+ years (he said that it had been sitting that long, didnt mention leaving one chambered). Anywho I have only shot 20 rounds since then, but considering before that every other round would do that, I'm convinced I fixed the problem. I haven't shot it anymore because I ran out of FMJs for reloading and have been using LRN and Berry's plated (0.356" instead of the smaller dia FMJs) and this old blue model has a significantly tighter bore than the newer one or my 709 that I've got about 500-750 rounds through. I'd have to seat the bullets so deep for them to chamber they'd be closer to flush wit the mouth than not. Because of availabilty of components is why I havent shot it more is what I'm saying. BTW, the blued is so old the serial number only has one letter in from of the numbers and isn't even recognized as a Taurus serial numbe rby either their website or the CS folks I asked when I called to order the pins. Anyone else have one this old? Any ideas on exactly HOW old? feel free to message me, I've been curious sicne I can't even look it up with the manufacturer. Also, the guy I bought it from still had the original box and it was Taurus but had this much older looking deisgn, like a brown backround wit a picture of what appears to be strips of those old brown potato-sack looking stuff.

I like the location of the safety on the PT92. The hammer on the newer ones seems cheap.
