Everytime I go to walmart, I go to the ammo cabinet and see if they happen to have anything good in stock. Well tonight, I hit the jackpot. They had two boxes of 100 round remington .357 magnum. They also had about seven boxes of 38 spcl+p but I could only afford the 357. So, I got both boxes. I bet they just put those on the shelf tonight, too.

Anyways, to get to my point here, whether it's 38 spcl, .357 magnum, or .22 LR, they alway ask when at the checkout, is this for a handgun? I refuse to answer anymore. It's none of their business what it's for. I know it's not the ladies at the register, but it's none of Walmarts business what i'm using the products I buy, for.

When I buy tissue, they don't ask of I'm going to wipe my butt or blow my nose. When I buy oil, they don't ask if it's for a car or a truck. I'm not obligated by law to answer their questions, but the computer will not complete the transaction until an answer is given.

I just simply say, I'm sorry, I will not answer that question. The checkout people are always just freaked out.

Anyways, just wanted to get that off my chest. I suggest everyone refuse to answer that. I do not want to participate in some Walmart anti-gun statistics or whatever they use that information for. It's all part of some survey for some agenda.

Anyways, just had to vent.

Actually, as I recall from other such threads on THR, Wally World's reason for this is that they are not allowed to sell handgun ammunition to people under 21. Along the same lines as checking if you're over 21 when buying things stupid people like to huff.

I don't particular care if they ask me or not. I think my local WalMarts must know me by now since they don't even ask anymore. That or they can tell I am over 21. Dang I hope it's the former :D

They ask me for ID whenever I buy any ammo. On the rare occasion they ask if it's for a handgun I just say "no".

I've had fun with some of them lately.

"Is this for a handgun?"

No, it's for a revolver.

No, it's for a pump action carbine.

No, it's for a pump action wheel gun.

No, it's for...........you get the idea. :D

Sadly, they have absolutely no clue! One of these days I'm sure I'll get someone a little wiser.

I just bought some 9mm and some .22lr at the Salem, Va Wallyworld and nobody asked me a thing. Maybe it is a state rule and not a Walmart thing...

No need for ID either.

Hmmm maybe I just look OLD:eek:

I seriousally doubt there is anything sinister about walmart's intentions. They want to know because you must be 18 for rifle / shotgun ammo, 21 for pistol ammo. Not really sure if its state or federal law but its walmart policy. If you dont want to answer go buy ammo somewhere else. They dont have to sell it to you and you dont have to buy it.

The Walmat I go to has people who hunt behind the counter. If it is your "traditional" pistol caliber they do not ask. Since I have a pistol caliber carbine, and they know it... they dont ask when I but 100 rounds of 9mm WWB for 19.99!

Isn't it a bit early in the morning for another "Wal-Mart" thread? Seriously, break out the tinfoil hat, because you're panicked over nothing....yes....NOTHING. If you have proof otherwise, feel free to provide it, but I opnly have two words for you: Good Luck

Just a question. Is there a posting of some sort as to why the "need to know?"
I`ve bought ammo at my local Wal-Mart and no questions were asked.
Course I`m old a dirt......:)

^^true statement. If you are 18, you can purchase rifle or shotgun ammunition. If you are 21 or older, you can buy all of that AND any pistol ammunition. Where the gray area of the law comes into play is that there are many RIFLES (yes, recognized by the ATF as rifles) that are chambered in what most would consider a "pistol caliber". However, because it's a rifle, in that instance (lets say its a 9mm AR-15 carbine) you're buying rifle ammo.

It's a stupid law, IMO. If you're not 21, tell them it's going into a rifle, and you can buy it and do with it what you wish. It's not illegal for someone under 21 to possess the ammunition, it's only illegal for someone to sell handgun ammunition to them. I also don't agree with the required age of 21 to purchase a handgun. They say it's an effort to reduce gun violence and death. But the fact of the matter is you're much more effective (at killing, i daresay) with an AR-15 with 30 round mags full of .223rem than you are with a 9mm pistol. The AR has much longer range, much higher capacity, much more lethal. If a 18-19 year old street thug wants a weapon, his only option is the more effective of the two.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't think we should put any further restriction on guns. If anything, they should reverse the policy of 18 for long guns and 21 for handguns. Or, make the requirement age 18 for all firearms. At 18 you can be drafted into the military and be issued the M9 pistol, an M4/M16, and possibly be put in charge of million dollar equipment. So all of a sudden the government trusts an 18 year old with a pistol? hmm, alright.

Gun control laws have to be fought. If you give a mouse a cookie... he'll want a glass of milk/"assault" weapons ban.

...in the area of gun control laws, it's more like "...give a RAT a cookie...";) I agree...there is little common sense in any restriction put on our 2A rights...WalMart has not been our friend as of late years...more worried about suits than service...they have been an occasional source of cheap practice ammo when the local gunshops were completely out...they use us...we use them...

I usually say "It's for my machine gun"....just to see the look on their face.

They always ask here. They don't check ID, I wish I was still close enough to 21 they still needed to check my ID. I guess when they see an old geezer there is no need to check there age.

I buy all of my ammo at Academy. They have good stock(at least where live) and prices are comparable to Wallyword, never a problem there. Pay .01 cent a round more there and save your self a hassle.

Yeah, it's just as stupid as asking me for ID when I buy booze there! I'm 69 years old for God's sake.................

When you are 62....one never get's "ID'd" anymore. The silver lining to all of the aches and pains I guess.

Hello all, RON L here

I have been asked the handgun Question and I have told them NO, Or as one fellow here said, I told them NO<,It's for my Machine gun!!! They usually have no clue what to say or do, I just take the ammo from them and pay for it or leave and pay up front! Last year that were scourting folks to the Front if they did not pay for it back at sporting goods?

RON

Well all I know is wally world has is a limit on how many boxes you can buy on handgun ammo and rifle ammo. As for any other questions all you need to do is call them about it and they will answer them for you. Just call 1-800-WAL-MART If you really want answers that's what I did. Oh yea the limit at my local store is 6 boxes per customer per day.

The guy behind the cash register is just doing what he's been told to do, so we give him a hard time with our answers. Then later we wonder just why he doesn't give a rats hind end when we ask him a question.

Poor dude can't win for loosing.
Another old saying sorta fits this, You reap what you sow.
