Hello-Local gunshop has both of these handguns in stock and they both appear online to be in great shape! The cz82 is 220.00 and the 5906 is 350.00

Opinions on if you had neither one which would you get first(price only allows one).

If I get the CZ what do I look for to make sure i get a nice weapon? Same goes for the 5906? Anything to look out for either gun?

Thanks Jim

I really like the CZ82. Great little gun for the $$.
I'm thinking the most common problem is the mag release. CZ USA sells replacement for around 35 bucks. Mags are kind of high at around 35 also.
Both are fine guns, and the price is pretty much the going rate.

I have the CZ82. For me it's a range/plinking toy. I had some trouble getting mine running. Fault of the previous owner. CZUSA supports their products superbly. They where great to deal with.

I've had my best results with Sellier and Belloit ammo. Mine does not like the Serbian ammo/. (PPU...?)

I've given some thought to the 5906, they are well thought of, but I have another CZ a 75b that fills that slot really well.

no expierence with the CZ but have a 5906 and it is my best all around autoloader. would no be good for concealed carry as it is kinda big and heavy, but it may be the perfect range/night stand gun. I cannot make it malfunction and it is so accurate it borders on boring.....absolutely can not go wrong with it. (looks pretty dang good also)

CZ and S&W are my two favorite handgun brands. Both are great guns, but I lean towards the 5906. I have no use for a .380, especially a large one. The 5906 is a classic.

I've got both, actually multiples of both. These days both are good bangs for the buck, since both are really surplus (CZ military and S&W probably police trade in), both are all steel and will outlast your grand kids.

The CZ: Pros: All steel, small enough for easy CC, price. Cons: Mags are kinda pricey, caliber is on the low side and not as available (especially defense loads), finish will wear to a degree (some is probably already gone from the front of the grip), safety is a little atypical compared to US guns.

The 5906: Pros: All stainless steel (you'll never have any finish problems), mags readily available and not too pricey, common caliber, parts are easy (if you ever need any). Cons: Heavy, so forget about CC.

If I had to choose between the two I would go with the 5906, it's a tank, you will never break it or wear it out, the finish will never wear, 9mm is cheap and easy to get, you can get lots of mags cheap, yeah it's heavy....but that makes for low recoil.

The prices you quote at your LGS aren't too out of line, you can get them a little cheaper on line but then have to deal with shipping and transfer fees....the price on the CZ is better than the S&W.

Depending on what you own already and what you plan to do with it, I'd go with the 5906. It is as much a classic as the CZ and in a more effective caliber.

Big fan of the 5906. $350 is not a bad price if it is in great condition. I don't think you need to lose any sleep over the decision whichever way you go. Both solid choices.

They are both worth having. My 82 is a superbly accurate gun with the pinned barrel, and 13 rounds of 9x18 is nothing to sneeze at. Trigger reset is very nice too. Ergos are great. Trigger is very smooth. Make sure the mag release functions correctly.

Mags are expensive, but so are 5906's if you buy new from S&W. But, you can find 5906 mags at gun shows. Good luck finding CZ 82/83 mags at a show.

The 5906 is more of a duty belt gun or HD gun, and 16 rounds of 9x19 is comforting. Trigger reset is great, and recoil is extremely light. The Hogue grips make it a lot thicker, so I left the OEM's on.

All in all, if only 1 could come home, I would get the 5906 and wait on the 82. If the condition is good, that's a nice price with 2 mags, just check to see that the trigger play spring is not broken. The gun would still function, but it's a PITA to change it (I know).

If it's strictly for CCW, the 82 is the better choice though, IMHO.

Both are ultra reliable and accurate for combat/SD purpose. If it's going to be a carry gun I'd probably get the CZ. If it's more of a IDPA or home defense I'd probably get the Smith. For a range toy, trapsing in the woods where no dangerous game is or just something to toss in the glovebox it'd be a toss-up.

Tough call. Both are great guns. I own a CZ82 and it's just a wonderful gun in so many ways.

3rd generation S&W's are great duty guns. I've had a 4006 and it's been 100% reliable. I don't own a 5906, but wouldn't mind owning one. I just have too many 9mm's right now.

I like my 82 just fine, but it is a bit of a hobby gun. Holsters, grips, magazines, and ammo, are all just a little harder to find than for the Smith. On the other hand, it's very handy and easy to wield, and it shoots like a laser...

If it's a first gun or an "only" gun (for a while) I'd get the S&W. (I have a CZ-82, by the way, and it is a fine gun -- but I think the S&W is a better gun for just about any use except deep concealed carry.

There are a few CZ-82s to be found in .380, but they were rebarreled by the importer. I'd prefer the 9x18 version.

I should have had my glasses on when I first read the post. I thought he was talking about the CZ 83.

CZ-83s were (and are, but not in the US) available in .32, .380 and 9x18. You can find them used in all three calibers. I think CZ-USA is only importing .380s, now.

While I'm a huge fan of the cz-82, I also LOVE the 5906. Unless you intend on carrying whatever you buy here, I'd say go for the 5906 first. But ultimately get both, because both are great pistols.

I have a lot of respect for both. I own an '82 and hope to get a 5906 someday (unfortunately it keeps getting pushed back by other models though).

Depending on your reasons for wanting the 5906, you may want to consider the 915 or 910. These are the value models of the 5906, and from what I understand, they have the same durability and overall functionality.

I am tempted to snag a dirt cheap 915/910 via Cole's on Gunbroker. He's listing them for barely over $200, which is a steal for what you get. But since the 5906 is a "want" rather than a "need" I think I will hold out for the 5906 due to its greater refinement and stainless finish.

Good luck. You will be happy with either choice.

Widners has the 659s for like $275. + shipping? If its your only gun I think I would go that route. Tuff to carry conceld but parts and mags are going to be easyer to find for it. The 9mm round has been around in the US longer then the Mak so there is more SD ammo made for it and its pretty cheap to buy plinking ammo. Mak ammo is ceap but only a few companys make it that I am aware of.

Both are good.

If you're going to carry frequently I'd look for a 5903 (aluminum frame version of the 5906). For HD / Range / Occasional Carry the 5906 is great. The CZ-82 is a great gun, but it's big for a 9x18 / .380. On the other hand if $350 is stretching the budget then the $220 CZ-82 leaves funds available for holster & practice ammo.

$299 for the 5906 and 6906 for $327 at centerfiresystems or CDNN don't remember where I got mine but both are well made $700+ weapons when new?
