Where I live in California we have some lame gun laws to say the least.
Alongside of that, the stores in the Los Angeles area charge huge markups
on anything they sell.

A gun-safe I have seen for $59.99 online the gunstores sell it for $89.99-$100.
Most places wont do FFL transfers. They say "go find a garage dealer" :neener:
The one store that would, wanted to charge $80 etc etc...

So what kind of legalities would I run into say...purchasing a gun from Nevada,
Arizona, Texas or such. Assuming the gun itself is California legal. Is it illegal
to buy a California legal gun out of state just to bring it back home with you?

From the BATFE "Questions & Answers" at:
http://www.atf.gov/pub/fire-explo_pub/2000_ref.htm

(B2) From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA?
A person may only buy a firearm within the person’s own State, except
that he or she may buy a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee's premises
in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the
State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides.
[18 U.S.C 922(a)(3) and (5), 922(b)(3), 27 CFR 178.29]

So, you can purchase a long gun only out of state from a dealer as long as you and it meet CA requirements. Whether or not a dealer will sell one to you is entirely a different matter.

You cannot legally purchase anything out of state through a private sale.

Thanks for the reply Cuervo. Looks like the long guns are "do-able" but
no handguns from out of state for me.

Well I guess it could be worse ;)

Long guns aren't do-able either. You will need to have the long gun shipped to a FFL in california then do the 10 day waiting period per california law. If you go east of L.A. there are FFl's that will do transfers for a reasonable price. I use Bright Spot Pawn in Riverside who does transfers for $45. If you order the rifle yourself no tax too. Lone Gunman, in california the state charges $25 so the FFL gets $20(Bright Spot Pawn) for receiving the firearm and then holding it for the 10 day waiting period for a total of $45. If the FFL orders the firearm you only pay the $25 transfer but they charge you more for the firearm and then they put sales tax on top of that. Mark

The last transfer I got was 10 bucks.

'Course, the gun was a birthday gift my dear old Dad...
