Buying handgun ammunition in Florida

How old do you have to be to buy handgun ammunition in Florida? Couldn't find anything about it on Packing.org, but I've heard 21. I'm 18, but they let me buy ammunition at the range, so I'm confused. If you're not 21, what hoops do you have to jump through to purchase some?

How does the ATF determen if ammo is handgun or rifle? A Hi-Point carbine takes 9mm and .40 S&W. T/C has almost every rifle cartiage chambered for it.

So if someone under 21 buys a carbine he can't legally buy ammo for it? Or is the ammo considered rifle rounds?

You just say the ammo is for a rifle if you have a carbine, and the Wal-Mart system should change the "Is the customer 21?" question on the cash register to "Is the customer 18?" They really don't have any way of checking, but when you consider that with hundreds of millions of guns floating around and some 90 million gun owners, there are only about 10,000 gun murders per year, I'd say we're doing pretty well (not to mention a lot of those murders come from NYC, Chicago, DC, etc.)

Thanks for the tip, I never thought of that. I'll have to try it. I've bought shotgun ammunition several different times from Walmart before and they never ask to see my ID, so I might not even have to do this.

If you are using it in a rifle it is rifle ammo, a pistol, pistol ammo. Some places still dont care and make their own decisions, but Walmart realizes this and thats why the computers will ask you what gun it is for.

I find this interesting because Wal-Mart has a strict stance on many other items. Carb cleaner you ahve to be 18 to buy Model glue is kept behind the counter with the cigarettes (again, 18 to buy) Yet the take the time to make sure ammo is sold correctly, instead of just taking a blanket age (21).

And don't you know the law is effective when I can buy the EXACT SAME AMMO if it is being used in a rifle, but I can't if it is being used in a pistol :banghead:

Don't get too excited. When you purchase ammo at Wal-Mart, the register beeps and asks the cashier to verify your age. The cashiers usually just look you over and if they think you are at least 21 they won't say anything. If they are unsure, they will ask for ID.

If you look old and/or have lots of facial hair, you might get away with it. Not that I condone breaking the law.
