C&R bound book

I would have posted this in the C&R section of THR but, oh that's right, there isn't one....darn.

Anyway, I understand that have to keep a 'physical' bound book separate from my gun storage. I was wondering what everyone else uses as a bound book and if you all thought it was OK that I keep an electronic copy on my computer, then print out a copy on a piece of 8.5X11 and put it in my ammo locker everytime I acquire a new C&R.

I appreciate any help on this; I am quite new to C&R. Thanks!

As noted in the booklet Federal Firearms Licensee General Guidelines and Information you should have received in your packet, "a bound book should either be permantly bound or an orderly arrangement of loose-leaf pages".

Yeah, I read that and figured that printouts on paper should probably qualify as a an 'orderly arrangment of loose-leaf pages'. What do you use for your bound book, if I may ask?

I got one from Brownell's when I had an order together- I think it was around $3. It has room for 378 records.

I don't believe that I've seen a requirement that the bound book be kept separate from the gun storage. Do you have a reference? Thanks.

I printed out record pages from Surplusrifle.com, and keep them in a 1/2" 3 ring binder.

I'm thinking of the same method for my new C&R bound book. The typed info is easier to read than what I could scribble on a printed form.

I think a nice, typed, orderly arrangement of loose leaf papers would be better than my hand-scribbled orderly arrangement of loose leaf papers.

If anyone has info to the contrary, please let me know.

Right, my hand writting is...well I don't think you can really call it writting at all. That is why I opted for the typed approach...

Same here, but I use a 1" 3 ring binder, and I keep them in those plastic page protectors.

Nice, easy, cheap, expandable, and convenient.

I use NM's Gun Collector software, print out a bound book report and put it in my binder. Works great. Nothing in the regs says the stuff has to be handwritten.

No, but the regulation requires BATF approval to use a computer based bound book. That approval is for the individual licensee.

(h) Alternate records. Notwithstanding the provisions of paragraphs
(a), (e), and (f) of this section, the Director of Industry Operations
may authorize alternate records to be maintained by a licensed dealer or
licensed collector to record the acquisition and disposition of firearms
or curios or relics and the disposition of armor piercing ammunition
when it is shown by the licensed dealer or the licensed collector that
such alternate records will accurately and readily disclose the required
information. A licensed dealer or licensed collector who proposes to use
alternate records shall submit a letter application, in duplicate, to
the Director of Industry Operations and shall describe the proposed
alternate records and the need therefor. Such alternate records shall
not be employed by the licensed dealer or licensed collector until
approval in such regard is received from the Director of Industry
Operations.

I'm aware of that. I'm not using the program as my bound book. I'm using it to create the printouts which is my bound book.

I'm using printouts of an Excel spreadsheet the same way. BATF told me that it's still a computer program and requires individual approval. The approval is easy to get and gives some peace of mind.
