My C & R license was in the mail this morning!!!! It was a surprise because I mailed my app exactly one month ago. I was expecting at least another month wait. But, the rest of the information packet won't be here for another 10 days or so according to the letter. I already have a copy of the record book from Brownells but I would like to know if there are any surprises in the fine print that I should be aware of? I really really don't want to wait to start spending money!

Here is my want list, so any ideas on this would be appreciated.

K-31 (maybe two)
M-96 Swede
M-38 M-N
M-44 M-N
Another 91-30 M-N
Yugo Mauser
Another Turk Mauser

Of course, all the US models available. But I'm not greedy.

Edit to add: I've got an SKS. :D

I got mine this year. First purchase was a MN 91/30 and a WWII German K98k Mauser.

Future purchases will probably be the MN 38, Swiss K31, Turk or Yugo Mauser and maybe an Enfield. Can't leave out the possibility of another German Mauser.

I already have a M1 Garand, 1903A3 and a SKS.

Mine only took a month also. Don't forget that a C&R gets you dealer pricing at places like Midway and Brownell's, and also gets you a pass to the SHOT Show. It also qualifies you to get a Garand from the CMP! ;)

BTW.....the 'record' you refer to is only a suggestion by the ATF to aid law enforcement in getting your guns back if they are stolen. Yeah, right...like they're gonna go looking for them.

I keep all of my purchase/transfer paperwork so I figure that speaks for itself more than some handwriten information that anyone could fabricate, if they wished.

I also keep detailed photos, serial numbers, locations of those numbers, any unusual markings on the guns, etc. for insurance and report purposes.

:what: :what: :what:

That 'record' is his bound book, the book that the ATF requires you to log in & out any weapons that fall under the C&R catagory. Not having one is a very bad idea if you are ever audited :uhoh: .

Erm... :scrutiny:

The info packet will probably arrive within the next couple of days. I got my books the day before the license arrived.

Make sure you do not sign the original license. Make copies and sign those.

Yes, the Bound book is REQUIRED. Any C&R eligible guns you acquire while licensed need to be entered, even if you did not use the license to buy them (a lot of people are confused about that one).

I guess that I am about 3 weeks away from getting my C&R, based upon the postings hare.

Question: How about C&R eligible weapons that you own prior to obtaining the license. Probably 1/2 of my collection is C&R eligible, what are the thoughts on adding these to my bound book? For most of them I won't be able to remembrer from whom I obtained them, or dates, what would you suggest for an annotation if I decide to log these? Something like " In possession at time of licensure"?

One of everything you can afford from WWII :) (Thats my goal, anyways)
When you get there, one of everything you can afford from WWI :D
By the time I get there, most of the Vietnam Guns should be becoming C&R :neener:

I concur, though my dad has already begun that project and had a few years' head start, so we just collaborate. In fact, I recently ordered him a No.4 Enfield for Christmas.

I got my C&R permit this summer, and the first purchase for myself was a Yugoslavian 59/66 SKS. I'd advise anyone to get the permit. They pay for themselves after one purchase, and you can't beat having surplus weapons mailed to your front door at wholesale cost.

Excellent advice.

Don't forget that a C&R gets you dealer pricing at places like Midway and Brownell's,

Warning!
Brownell's commercial. I happened to call Brownell's the same day I mailed my app so I went ahead and ordered the bound book to save time later. The very nice lady who took my order asked about the book so I told her about the coincidence and she gave me the dealer discount that day! I saved almost the cost of the license on that order. Brownells gained a very happy and loyal customer.

They will get the first copy of my license.

I seem to spend a lot of time at the site above. They have a list of C & R dealers to link to. I've been trying to find the best prices but seem to just get more confused. But ain't it fun.
:D

As for C&R-eligible guns you own before getting the license, you don't have to enter them in the bound book unless you sell them. Then you have to enter them and record the information about who you sold them to. When that happens, just note that it was acquired before you had the license in the acquisition side of the record.
