If I have a C&R license, it is legal (under Federal law) for me to purchase eligible firearms out of state, correct? (that's my understanding)

CA requires licensed mail or internet purchasers of out-of-state C&R handguns to have them shipped to an 01 FFL. But...

Can I purchase (in person) a C&R eligible handgun in Nevada, assuming said firearm is on the DOJ approved list, and legally transport it into the state?

Approved list doesn't apply AFAIK. You can fly to Florida (or drive to Nevada) and buy ANY C&R pistol (age doesn't matter as long as it is C&R) and either carry or ship (via UPS) it back to yourself. You have 5 days from importation to file the right paperwork with the state.

It's perfectly legal. I've bought several C&R handguns in Nevada and Arizona. All you have to do is file Form BCIA 4100A with the DOJ within 5 days of importing the firearm along with $19.00 for each firearm. You should call the Firearms Division and have them send you a copy. You can then reproduce it and have the forms available. The form is not on the DOJ website.

You can also purchase C&R rifles and shotguns of any age while out of state. There are no notifications required when you bring them back. Just be sure than they are not classified as "assault weapons" and that you don't bring back any magazines over 10 rounds.

Thanks for all the info, guys.

The "must transfer to 01 FFL" rule applies only to mail-order? That's really freakin' stupid, but then we're talking about CA gun laws, so that goes without saying. It would at least be consistent (consistently wrong) to require ALL importations of handguns to go through gun shops. And the shops would be all for it, the transfer fees are pure profit. I guess this is one time I'm glad logic doesn't apply.

I'll bet prices on old wheelguns are less in Nevada, too...
