Live Oak Teens Accused Of Poaching

POSTED: 11:23 am PST January 18, 2008

MARYSVILLE, Calif. -- Sutter County prosecutors are considering charges against two teenagers accused by game wardens of poaching 13 deer near the Sutter Buttes.

State game warden Sean Pirtle describes the incident as a thrill kill. He calls it the worst poaching case he's seen in his 11-year career.

The teens allegedly cut out prime venison and left the rest to rot.

The 16- and 17-year olds are from Live Oak. They were arrested Tuesday and released to their parents. Two rifles also were seized.

Pirtle is asking prosecutors to charge the teens with illegally taking deer, wasting game meat and using a spotlight to attract the deer. The misdemeanors could bring them up to a year in jail.

Thrill killing? Sounds like they were being stupid, but the Thrill Killing label just sounds dumb to me. If they wre just doing it for fun, why did they take the good meat?

Seems like a straight poaching set up to me. The parents must have known what is going on if the kids were bringing home back straps frequently.

"...using a spotlight to attract the deer..."????!!!! What is this guy talking about?! They're not moths, fer cryin' out loud! If lights attracted deer the Interstate Highway System would be a slaughterhouse every night! LOL!!
