Cabela's coming to Dayton Ohio area (Centerville).

This is an FYI:

The planning commission is supposed to review the building plan January 27. Other than that, no date has been set.

"CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) – Cabela’s has its eye on opening shop at the Cornerstone of Centerville development. The outdoor apparel and equipment store filed a petition to open a 72,000 square foot retail store there. The City of Centerville must still sign off on the petition."

Oh sure, Dayton as I sit and rot away in Cleveland. First Columbus and now this? There is no God.
Seriously, I love the Columbus store. With siblings, kids and grand kids in Columbus we get down there quite often. Best wishes to Dayton. :)

The Cabelas super stores are an excellent compliment to our outdoor sports.

They are impressive with that giant diorama of game animals and have plenty of guns and far more stuff than than the small old shops.

My wife likes to go there for a walk around in the warm clean environment and get lunch. On the last trip she noticed a polar bear. Wow are they big!

You all should go to the one in Wheeling W.Va. They have a really nice display of deer taxidermy there, bigger than just the normal displays in the middle of the store. It is in an entire separate room of its own.

I have never been to the Columbus store, I hear Wheeling is bigger.

The folks that work at the Wheeling store are decent people and go out of their way to help you.

For you folks that live north of me in the Cleveland area, it is faster (at least it seems faster) to go to the Wheeling store if you take old US 250 instead of I-77 to I-70. I go 21 south to where it intersects 77 at Strasburg, then s to 250 then run 250 through the boonies to Bridgeport and pick up 70 there. It also a much more scenic route. We have seen bald eagles snatching fish out of Tappan Lake. Coming out of Cleveland, you would take 77 s and pick up 21 in Montrose at the 136 mile mark and then 21 s. It lets you entirely miss Akron and Canton.

The store over in Dundee Mi. is a monotonous drive across the turnpike.

If you go to the Columbus store with kids/grandkids and don't mind a detour, go west on 224 (209 mile mark off I-71 s) to 42 N and there is the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi. They specialize in muzzle loaders and have a small FREE unique museum that is well worth the short side trip. You can also stop at Fin Feather Fur at US 250 in Ashland.

Yes the old showroom stores are all bigger and much more of a destination shop. I used to go to the one in Dundee Michigan and have been to Wheeling several times as well. Very much worth the drive / especially if you are nearby with a few hundred dollars to spend! (Or just to look if you are broke).

The "Trading Post" sized stores (under 100,000 sqft - 72,000 sqft +/-) have some neat features but are not the huge stores they used to build. Likely because of the cost and competition via the internet.

They do a good job of having the things you go to the store the most for.... I've not been disappointed with the amount of merchandise available, but I do miss the store experience of Dundee or Wheeling.

Cabela's came to our little burg in the form of "Cabela's Express". Not sure exactly what that means but if you're hankering to pay a lot more than anywhere else it's the place to go. Same for the Gander Mountain that just opened.

Cabela's did have CCI primers at $29.95/1,000 for a while and I stocked up but they're still just a reference. Window shopping is still free and the kettle corn is pretty good.

While I'm in the Columbus store at least once a week it was a disappointment compared to Wheeling.

Cabelas is fun. Not a great place for commodity type shopping (like a competition shooter buying bullets and powder for high-volume use) but it is a great example of the "destination store" where you might enjoy just wandering around for a while looking at all the gear on display, with (theoretically) like-minded people. :)

I get to ours about once a year. One thing that's pretty cool is the bargain cave and/or mark-downs after big shopping seasons. I had to go after Christmas to exchange a pair of boots and ended up stumbling onto a REALLY nice hard-side carbine case marked down nearly 50%.

Watertight hard case like the old Pelican I used to keep my Anschutz in. Sized to just fit a 16" carbine or two. WITH an additional padded soft case that can fit inside it. For $79!

A fun outing with the family, got some decent gear, and I don't have to make the trip again for another year! :)

They recently broke ground on a Cabella's just north of Cincinnati (at I-75 and OH 129). I'm surprised they would build another so close.

store sizes have really changed. I remember going to their first store in downtown Sidney and it was really small. inside of it wasn't much bigger than a couple convenience stores. the first big store was in Kearney in the late 1980's and now it is by far the smallest of the stores. the thing about the Kearney store is that when Rockwell valve moved out and left it to the city. Kearney made Cabela's a hell of a deal on it so it is the only store that is "paid off" and produces more money per square foot than all of the other stores because they won't ever get paid off. it also has a call center

They need to build one in Northern Kentucky as Louisville is 90 Miles away. The one above Cincinnati is 30 miles but KY residents can't buy handguns there.

They opened one about 35 miles south of here in GA in August. Another will open within the year about 50 miles north, both right on I-75. If I'm looking to buy guns, ammo etc, I can do better elsewhere. But being able to be in the stores I've gotten several fantastic deals on other items.

I bought a goose down sleeping bag rated for 0 degrees for under $150. Price on the box was just under $350.

On another visit I found a pair of these in the Bargain cave, priced at $208. But they were reducing everything in there by 50% until lunch, so I'm just over $100 for boots that would have been well over $300 with tax and shipping

Overall I'm pleased to have one close. I've been in a few while traveling, Dallas, Mitchell SD, and Kansas City. But we only had a short time to get a quick look before getting back on the road. Much better than Bass Pro or Gander Mt stores I've been to.

Right?

I'm not asking for much and it doesn't even have to be in Cuyahoga county, Lorain or Medina county would work for me.
Nope, I want it on my corner so I can just walk up there anytime. :)

I guess at one point Cleveland was considered and I forgot what went wrong with the plan. :(

Meh cabelas is alright but only worth the trouble if something is on super super discount (at that point maybe maybe a buck or two less than a local shop)
or you have one of their employee discount cards and want something cabelas branded ( the discount is much higher on their brand of gear) expect MAYBE 10-15% off regular items but 30-40% cabelas brand stuff (it changes from item to item depending on mark up).
but I will say it's a good place to look at some stuffed animals and get a elk or bison burger, as the prices on food in the restaurant here isn't bad (for what it is) about $10 for a elk burger with drink and frys and $11 for bison

Bargain Cave at the one in Hammond used to be really good. It's degraded to the point that it's barely worth walking into any more.

Main part of the store has a good selection of a variety of stuff. I suppose you could get stuff cheaper in the web, but there's something about looking at it, then carrying it out with you.

Nice to try on the clothing, though I think Bass Pro has just as good of quality at a much better price

They're coming soon to Cincinnati too, pretty happy about that. Funny too that the local Bass Pro Shops is going to close their shop and build a new facility right next to the new Cabela's. I hope that the competition will make Bass Pro drop their prices. Bass Pro's prices are consistently much higher than Cabela's.

Oh, to the Chicago poster talking about how they downsized eventually. Well, the Cabela's is doing great business around these parts, they're even expanding. There's a lot of interest in this kind of sporting store around these parts. Not much else to do around here anyway, LOL!

The Cabelas in Newark Delaware has the best selection of defensive ammo in the area. When they opened last year they gave out coupons for $25 off a purchase of $100, so I got Fed AE .45 ACP for $16.00 a box. Otherwise probably not the cheapest, but there's no sales tax in Delaware.
