I've visited my local cabelas 2 times in the last week and each time I've noticed the gun counter people are carrying blue/training guns in holsters but theirs are orange. Today one had a revolver one in the small of his back in a IWB holster, one had one on a thumbreak holster the other day and one has it in a pocket today.

what in the world is the reason behind this? a deterrent for someone shooting up the place or theft?

If I had to guess, the reason probably has something to do with being able to demonstrate carrying techniques/draws from different positions.

I was going to but they all run and hide when they see a customer. I wanted to look at a scope and wasn't going to walk 50ft take a number and walk 50ft back to the scope being the only customer so I stood there waiting and 3 guys ignored me for 10min and 2 ran for the back room.

Sounds about right.

You too huh? Oh and after standing there for 15min trying to find 50-60gr v max on a shelf where 55gr sp are priced $58 and calibers all mixed together one guy wanted to play detective and spy on me through the shelves and up to the register. if it wasn't 10min away I'd never go there.

Last time I was at a cabelas (it was relatively new and I wanted to check ot out) I wanted to try out a handgun my local stores dont have and waited for like ten minutes while all the counter guys vanished. Got bored and wandered away.

My experience with the Cabellas in Allen, Texas, was that after spending half-an-hour being ignored by employees who were talking to each other (or talking to customers about the Dallas Cowboys), I had to literally stand in front of one of their employees (when they were not sheltered behind a counter) to get them to pay any attention to me.

I haven't been back.

I see the same behavior at the auto parts store I work at. Some folks will position themselves 15 feet from the counter across the aisle and wait. Just stand there.

I have to ask, if you were at another place standing 15 feet from the counter and wanted to place an order for a beer, would you be resoundly ignored? I can guarantee that those who do want to get a beer will not stand nearly out of sight as far as possible from the counter.

How many are being coy and demure when you basically need to entrap them? I can tell you the garage owners and mechanics don't lack for boldness in getting my attention - by politely walking right up to me and saying something. I see them do it all the time, the wall flowers roll their eyes as if they have been horribly slighted. Well, they have been.

It's a wonder how some ever made contact with a female and proposed marriage with that tactic. It's as if they think they are so impressive in physical form that they couldn't possibly be missed? Let me add that this problem has been growing over the years - it seems each generation moves back another foot. Ten years ago they were a lot closer - and still getting cut off and ignored.

No, the store staff shouldn't be hiding or somewhere other than out in front to help. Then again, listening to them discuss how much stuff management inserts into their word day, sales clerks are clearly given so many extra duties beyond helping customers on the floor that yes, it IS management contributing to the problem.

As said, how many ask for the floor manager to express it? Nope, once again we have posters who would rather come here to complain - basically using the same behavior pattern. Distance yourself as far as possible away from where interaction takes place and then wait for change.

Let's chalk it up to how brick and mortar are driving sales out of the store. Sales staffs have NOTHING more important than waiting on customers, we all agree on that. None the less - who's going to stock the shelves, sweep, perform the endless cycle count inventories, returned goods inventory, cash refund inventory, and other auditing reports when management fills their day with meetings as far away from the sales floor as possible?

I will point out that there are plenty of managers who frequent this forum. Have you noticed their complete absence in participating in these threads?

I’ve seen a few of these Cabela bashing threads over the last year or so. The one thing that they all have in common is that no one has ever indicated that they brought it to the store manager’s attention.

Just sayin’
I'm not one to do things like that but I'm definitely calling today cause this happens way too much. last time about 3 weeks ago i went to purchase a 22 scope they all ran and hid and left a 3 day old employee up front who said he wasn't even allowed to help me cause he was new but he would anyways.

I agree with the people moving way back and waiting but this is cabelas thing. take a number and stand there like an idiot for 10min until someone decides to come out of the back room and help you. the gun counter is about 50ft long and the scopes at the far left along with cheaper rifles and all the handguns, AR'S. etc are right by the number machine and that's where all the employees hang out. I was standing there at the counter looking at them and they made eye contact and began disappearing. one-young guy probably new came out of the back room while the older crew stayed in the back room and i had to say hey can you help me in which he did and within the 10min looking at several scopes not one of his 3 co workers came out of the back room. I seen an older gentlemen a month or so ago stand there with no other customers and had number 70-something and the board said customer like 55. I walked right over and said hey i need primers and the older guy threw is number down and left.

Or, I just go to my LGS where the employees are helping me before I get through the door (pretty much) and the prices are better. All Cabelas/Bass Pro/Gander are useful for me are guns I can't try at my LGS and the RARE deal on a used gun, but lateley even used guns are marked up to new prices.

my LGS is about 25min away. I have been trying to hit cabelas cause its 10min away and supports my county taxes and such but not anymore. Oh and my LGS which is a 5 chain store family owned now lets their employees carry real guns! :D

I wish our LGSs were that attentive. One, they chat with each other and ignore the two customers in the store. The other where I shop is a huge store, lots of products, and they're so busy the employees just can't get to everyone in a timely manner. That, I can understand, but still... A third store (GT Distributors) that's 45 minutes away has outstanding and knowledgeable customer service, and decent prices. I wish I lived closer to them.

Perhaps they are advertising holsters.

The failing Gander Mountain here was not too bad on clerk response, I have not been to the nearest Cabelas 70 miles away.
Just got an Academy, they are being nice on startup but kind of thinly staffed, still hiring.
Just got an independent range/store, you can bet they are attentive.
I haven't "bonded" with any of the current local stores, my two old regulars closed down not too long ago.

In my opinion the store manager is the one responsible for this type of behavior. It's his responsibility to train his employees and that job just isn't being done so in effect you're preaching to the choir.

As a former retail store owner I wouldn't tolerate paid employees that cost me business.
I paid my retail employees to help my customers and sell my products.
Otherwise I don't need them.
This is not a contest of egos, its a business that feeds my family.
Without customers, I dont need employees.
Any employee of mine that willfully ignored a customer would be fired.

That said, I never had that problem as I hired competent staff who did a fantastic job, and eventually bought me out.
;)

So... did anyone ask them where they got the orange training guns from? Because Blueguns and ASP training guns are too damn expensive for a piece of plastic and I'm always looking for more real size training guns.

I mean seriously, they might be on to something we don't know about.

airsoft pistols. I know a guy with a sig 226 and his airsoft sig 226 fits his duty holsters. locks and all.

They use them specifically to show bad guys what a real gun might look like. They're not green because that looks too similar to money and gets confusing. The higher-ups and managers all carry orange ones to delineate who's the Boss. In order to get into the Gun Library I believe you have to have a yellow one but a brown will suffice.
