Cabela's stores won't take off trigger locks

I've been shopping for an SP101 (2" with the spurless hammer).
Found one out at the new Cabela's store built here in KC recently. It was slightly used, had Pachmayr grips and came with a Galco holster, and the price was all right. (Not great, but whatever)

I ask to see it, and my friend comments off handedly to the clerk, "That means he's buying it". I ask to take the lock off so I can try the trigger, it being a used gun and all...

Clerk says no, that's against store policy. Can't take the locks off and/or no dry fire allowed.

So I hand it back to him, and in a nutshell said 'You just lost a sale.' Meanwhile, a guy next to me that looked interested in one of the Glocks, said 'That must make it hard to sell guns'. Clerk responded with a shrug that kinda said, I know, but that's what They want...

Is it the same at all the Cabela Stores?

We have a sporting goods store chain called "Dicks Sporting Goods" in our little town with the same policy.

Imagine handling a Marlin lever action, and comparing it to a Win 94, and trying to make a decision without trying the trigger. The only place you can test drive a firearm regarding dry firing is in the little dealers.

I only buy from my "little dealer". They know me. I know them. Small businesses, I will buy from them almost everytime.

I don't recall seeing trigger locks on any of the handguns at the Cabela's in Minnesota.

If we liked buying things "sight unseen" then why would we be in the store in the first place?

In the case of the (used) Glocks, I would say "which trigger is in there, the standard, the New York, or the New York two?" If unknown, I'd say, "We'll let's just field strip it and find out." Oops, can't do that either. Then I'd politely tell them that their policy is going to cost them sales, just like Kamicosmos did. Always hit them where it hurts, in the pocketbook.

Yeah, I'm not heart broken over it. My gun store I usually go to can probably get me a new 101 for the price this used one was anyway. They'd probably even through in some ammo. (They know I reload, so they usually toss in some primers or 'trial' bullets they get from vendors...they're great guys)

We have some Dick's in KC...I'll stop by and see what their Lock policy is. I just find it odd that they won't let you try the triggers.
Seriously, why do they even take them outta the case? With the blocky trigger lock, I couldn't even grip the gun correctly!

Like Wolf said, I wouldn't buy a car I could test drive either.

just a side light to this....

when i get truly serious about buying a particular gun, or go shopping for a set caliber/gun combo. i tend to carry along a set of Snap-caps in my car, pocket, wife's purse, whatever is handy. this tends to reduce the objections of the clerks to my trying the trigger out on / dry-firing a gun.


round here the "trigger locked" stores are BASSpro shop and the Academy stores (which started locking the longguns right after they started getting in pistols). first time they pulled out a trigger lock in the process of getting out a gun i wanted to look at i stopped them, and told them no thanks. that if they followed that policy then it was a case of change of policy/new insurance or loss of any shooting related item sales to me, and as many folks as i could tell.

Hmm.. The Cabela's I have been to for Intel Gathering didn't seel anything that wasn't a revolver. No small CCW type stuff either.

The stores were in Orlando FL and outside Charlotte NC. We are getting one across the water in Hampton. (That ought to be a fun time; working the gun counter in Hampton...)

No Kimbers, Glocks, HK; no black rifles or mil-surp stuff, either.

Dick's is coming here too, but we shall see.

That's odd. The Cabela's in Dundee Michigan had a M1 Garand, 2 Ar-15's, several Kimbers, Glocks, a couple other semi-autos.

Also both Cabela's and myself are thinking that they don't even have a store in Orlando or NC.

he MAY have meant to say BASSPro instead of Cabela's.... there ARE BASSpros shops in Orlando and Charlotte. and such slips do happen.

This is why, when I buy a gun from one of the large chain stores, I go to Galyans. Very good prices, and they take off all the silly trigger lock bs and let you take a good look at the firearm. They even let me disassemble one (it was the display model) before I bought it. Nice folks.

Must be some local BS.

Same store, same experience. Try Galyans. Much nicer people. And, of course, you know The Bullet Hole.

I'll be driving past the Minneapolis Cabelas soon, on my way to Canada. I think I'll check their policy on this.

I'm pretty sure they are just covering their a$$es from being sued my some idiot, who asks to look at a pistol/revolver/rifle/shotgun with the intention of "checking the trigger feel".......then popping in a round or two from his pocket and either killing himself/someone in the store or robbing the place.

If any of you are complaining about the clerk REFUSING to remove the lock, you are darn tootin correct. Boy cott that store, thats just crap customer service.

If you are complaining about the mere fact that the store may put locks on a gun, you are being silly. This isnt politics, my god if a gun store has to keep locks on for insurance reasons or just becasue they want to ensure weapon security what difference does it make?

The Big-5 chain is the same way

I explained to one clerk how it's backwards thinking. With many firearms, you can't physically clear the gun to make darn sure it's unloaded.

I never even bothered asking them to take them off at Walmart. It would probably take an hour to find an employee who can find the key and knows how to operate it.

Anyway, these stores are foolish to rely on trigger locks to ensure against discharges. Pure PC.

The silly thing is that a man blew himself away with a shotgun at the Indianapolis Galyan's a year or two ago. How they allowed him to draw a round from his pocket is beyond me.

But The Rock says we are getting a Cabelas? I thought it was a Bass Pro Shops? Same diff, go two miles down the street and buy from Harvey at Superior Pawn.

Quick check to see if it is a real gun shop. If the counter staff is packing, it is. If they have to page somebody it isn't. Shop at the real stores.

To be fair, as Kcustom45 said the Cabela's did have a couple of AR15s, but 2 non-wood stocked, non "sporting" rifles out of however many hundred long arms isn't saying much. The fact that one was configured as a varmint rifle and the other was a post-ban Colt for $1500 doesn't help.
Still, it's hard to beat their selection of non-firearm equipment if you're looking for something specific. Or, if you're looking for a BP, lever, bolt, pump or PC semi-auto, you'll probably find what you want.
