"Armed robbery is one of the worst possible scenario's for a clerk working in a store, especially when that clerk is unarmed. Fortunately for the staff at Family Dollar on Florida Boulevard one of their own was armed when a robber threatened their lives Tuesday night.

Police say a would be robber, identified as 18-year-old Floyd Flood, went into the store, armed with a handgun, with the intent to rob the place. To Floyd's surprise the store clerk also had a gun.

Police say Floyd put his gun to the clerk's head. Then when Floyd became distracted while talking to the store manager, the clerk grabbed his 45-caliber handgun and shot Floyd more than once in the chest. Floyd was brought to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police Chief Pat Englade, who worked robbery for several years, says the situation could have been much worse. "This person saved not only his life but someone elses. This situation could have quickly gotten out of hand," said Chief Englade. "You never know how they are going to turn out until they are over with unfortunately."

According to a spokesman for Family Dollar there were customers inside the store at the time of the incident. Chief Englade says if you are ever caught in a similar situation don't try to be a hero.

"A robbery is probably one of the most traumatic thing to go through. We encourage people to do what they have to do, give them whatever they need so the situation can end quickly and no one will get hurt," said Englade.

The executive vice president of Family Dollar says the company's current policy at this time is that employees are not supposed to have weapons. However, he says they are evaluating the situation and their policy. Officials say the store clerk involved in the shooting is still employeed by the company, even though he was not at work Wednesday.

Meanwhile, district managers and representatives from Family Dollar's corporate office have been meeting all day. They say additional security will be added at various stores around town for an indefinite amount of time."

It will be interesting to see how Dollar General handles this among other things.

The sad thing is this guy will probably be fired. I imagine the company will probably want to make a statement to other employees about not carrying at work for corporate liability reasons, even if the powers that be are silently thinking "Way to go!"

I think you are right, PakWaan. An incident like this should promote self-defense by employees, and it probably will, albeit unofficially and against many company policies. Baton Rouge is in particular need of such examples. Robberies and burgleries there are very frequent occurences.

p.s. Send an email to Family Dollar in support of the employee. I have. just to let them know the position of my small slice of public opinion.

"We encourage people to do what they have to do, give them whatever they need so the situation can end quickly and no one will get hurt." In the face of a successful self defense situation and after saying, "You never know how they are going to turn out until they are over with unfortunately," the cop tries to tell people that if you give them what they want, they will go away.

He might as well have said, "ALWAYS give them what they want, and SOMETIMES you'll survive." Yeah, seems like a fair gamble to me

Good job on the clerk's part. Even used the right caliber :D This one ended up the way all of them should. I wonder how the gun grabbers will try to twist this one? They'll probably ignore it, just like they do most facts that disprove their faulty argument :fire:

*sniff....*sniff... I..love...happy....endings..., sniff, cry, snort, wail.....* ..:D

Nope, they'll just add another mark of a child/teenager killed by gunfire into their padded statistic column. They'll ignore the facts of the case but not that another "child" was killed by those eeeevil guns  .

"you never know how they are going to turn out until they are over with, unfortunately"

quite profound, don't you think?

Saxon,
I am also an Arkansan and saw the report. The folks he came from (Texas?) described the murder (purp) as having a 'bipolar disorder'. I wondered if it was because he got shot in BOTH cheeks of his 'posterrior'!!!! Anyway, good job by all!

UPDATE!!!!

Gunman had two arrests

Police identify man killed in robbery try

The man killed while allegedly trying to rob a Family Dollar Store Tuesday night has been identified as an 18-year-old with at least two arrests.
Cpl. Mary Ann Godawa of the Baton Rouge Police Department identified him as Floyd Flood, 1522 Briarrose Drive.

Flood was shot about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday while armed with a gun inside the store at 9584 Florida Blvd., off Cora Drive.

Police said Flood held a gun to an employee's neck while demanding money, then turned the weapon toward the store's manager.

As soon as Flood's attention shifted, the employee, Ledell Scott, pulled out a .45-caliber pistol and shot Floyd several times in the upper chest. Police have said Scott was acting in self-defense and will not be arrested.

Flood stumbled outside and collapsed next to the store. He died at Baton Rouge General Medical Center.

Police said Tuesday night they could not identify him because he carried no identification.

According to booking records at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, Flood was booked on July 29, 2002, with burglary of an inhabited dwelling, theft of a firearm and criminal damage to property. On Feb. 21, he was booked as a fugitive from the Kenner Police Department.

Capt. Steve Caraway of Kenner Police said Flood was wanted on a count of simple burglary of a vehicle in the theft of a car stereo. Caraway said Kenner police linked Flood to the crime by fingerprints in the car.

He said a woman identifying herself as Flood's mother insisted they had the wrong man.

"She said her son wouldn't have done that," Caraway said.

Calls to Flood's home were not returned Wednesday.

At least two other people have been killed during robberies in the past six months, and neither shooter has been arrested.

In January, Medgar Flowers, 33, shot and killed 26-year-old Joseph Going, who authorities said forced his way into Flowers' Glen Oaks home.

Authorities said Going had intended to rob Flowers and his wife.

About five blocks away, Antonio Jones, 24, shot and killed 30-year-old Michael Triplett on Dec. 16., after Triplett and another man had broken into Jones' home about 4 a.m., authorities said

Just sent my message
I have just read that a clerk in Baton Rouge Louisiana successfully defended himself against an armed robber. I applaud this clerk and would like to voice my support for his actions

. Given a choice, I would prefer to spend my money in a store where the employees have the option of lawfully carrying firearms for their defense.

"This person saved not only his life but someone elses. This situation could have quickly gotten out of hand," said Chief Englade.
Chief Englade says if you are ever caught in a similar situation don't try to be a hero.
So, it would have been better if one or two innocents had lost their lives instead of the bad guy losing his? :scrutiny:
How does that work?
Good for Mr. Scott. Two to COM is how you do it.

Nah, "Don't be a hero" is just something cops say to cover their asses. If they said "Be a hero," we'd probably have people trying to be Chuck Norris all over the place.

"A robbery is probably one of the most traumatic thing to go through. We encourage people to do what they have to do, give them whatever they need so the situation can end quickly and no one will get hurt," said Englade.

This site is still in extreme slow motion. Some other time.

It sounds like the clerk gave the robber exactly what he needed to end the situation quickly. :D
