Cabelas used gun prices

I happen to work very near one of the newer Cabelas stores in Rogers MN, so I'm able to get in a couple times a week and prowl through the used rifle, shotgun & handgun selection.

Who prices their stuff?

I've seen several genuine bargains, ie a pristine Browning BL-22 grade II for $269, a beautiful older Ruger No 1 in 30-06 for $399 and a handful of others.

On the other end of the spectrum - it gets ugly. Many well worn rifles priced at or near what you would spend to buy new. I'm a lever gun fan through and through and am always looking for older Marlins in nice shape and priced to move. They've got probably a dozen model 39's & 336's at the moment, most in fair to good condition ranging in price from about $379 on the low end to $999 for an older model 336 that must be especially "collectable".

And most of them sit....and sit....and sit...and sit

I've been to a few of their stores, and while some of the rifles I've checked out seemed pretty reasonable, some do not. They had some decent Swiss K31s on the rack in Buda, TX, but wanted well over twice the going rate for 'em. I ended up picking mine up at a gun store in San Antonio instead.
No, there didn't seem to be anything especially valuable about 'em, and the one I got was in slightly better shape. The serial #s varied widely, but they were priced about the same (though I don't remember those numbers... there may have been some additional collector value, but nothing I'd noticed)
Stuff like the ARs and other modern guns seemed to fit the market.

Those are just the asking price, make an offer, particularly now that deer season is past and they will knock a lot off that money, that No1 had a corroded bore. someone shot corrosive surplus ammo out of it and it is was black the whole way down. A cleaning rod run down the barrel felt like you were dragging it across the asphalt in the parking lot...They did have two Match Target woodsmans in a while ago, a 4.5 and a 6 inch, both priced at about 600 each, I got them both for 800 total.

I know how it is, I just needed to vent a little I guess. Asking prices on used guns are of course, just that. But some of the tagged prices are downright insulting...

This is really just typical of used guns....take gun shows...

I bought my BRAND NEW 642 for $339.00 plus tax from my dealer. At the gun show, I saw used ones priced as high as $399.00 for WELL used ones...what the heck is that all about?

My friend (RRTX on THR) recently got a nice little find at our local Cabellas on a rifle with decent glass, big bore...so yeah, the deals can be out there, but you have to be patient and look really good for them.

Do all cabelas have a gun and used gun department? One recently opened in Boise and I just need an excuse to go over there.

Yes, the Boise Cabelas has a used gun department, the gun library with the mint/exotic high dollar rifles/shotguns/handguns, the new firearms department, and a robotic Elmer Keith telling tall and regular-sized tales from a recreation of his den from his home in Salmon - desk, mounts, etc., - right down to his cigar - which is FABULOUS. It also has on display a selection of his personal rifles and handguns, and some neat pics of his early hunts/trophies. Well worth the visit, though I think Cabelas is a little proud of their merchandise - but I guess they have to pay for the cool building somehow. Go see it - it's neat.

Fortunately, I'm a very patient shopper and tend to bide my time, but when I find a good deal on something I like I don't hesitate!

The thing that's so distressing is the out of whack pricing seem to be particularly skewed towards the rifles I'm most interested in - the Marlins. Pete made a good point, they may be marked at a premium due to it being deer season. We'll see I guess...
