Came across this ad and would like opinions from others here on whether this sounds like a viable deal or a "let it pass" kinda deal?

original Springfield Armory M1 Garand serial # 545****. The barrel is dated 1953 and the rifling is still good. The barrel is CAI import marked. The bolt is marked SA and the trigger assembly is marked HRA.

Thats about all the specifics, except he sated the stock was in good shape. His pics would not load on my 'puter however, all I could see was the thumbnails.
The gun is local so there would be no shipping, and he wants $550 for it.
Would a Service Grade CMP Garand likely be a better rifle to pursue?

Some folks abhor the importer stampings. Makes no difference to me on a shooter. Most of the current CMP guns were "imported" they just weren't stamped as such.

IMO this gun and CMP rifle would be nearly a toss-up if you want a Garand to shoot. But my opinion doesn't count. Yours does.

I have a Garand with CAI marked on it. They are basically mix and match parts guns. Mine has run 100% from day one though. I bought mine to shoot the heck out of so I wasn't worried to much about the markings.

Any firearm Century had anything to do with is suspect. They have no concept of QC. They have assembled thousands of assorted rifles out of parts bins without bothering to check the headspace.

of the two I'd always choose the CMP gun, of course thats coming from a guy that lived a short drive from Anniston AL for a while and theres nothing better than goin through the racks at the CMP. As far the import stamp, who cares as long as it goes bang, that is unless you want it for collecting which really hurts its value. And with the CMP you KNOW what your getting as far as barrel wear

I had several CAI rifles, including a Garand, and had only one

problem with any of them. The Garand had a broken firing pin, which Century replaced free, including shipping. It was a good shooting rifle.
Much of their terrible reputation is repeated internet stuff.

f you want a shooter, check it carefully and you may have a bargain.

Got a CAI M1 Garand a few years ago as a gift. Had trouble with the bolt sticking. Sent it back and they fixed it no questions asked. Has run like a clock since.
