Cali legal AR!

That DPMS single-shot lower receiver is a HUGE pain in the rear if you're using it as an AR lower. A friend of mine owns one of those lowers (purchased ahead of the .50BMG ban out here) and it doesn't lock the bolt back when empty. So in order to load it you have to manually lock the bolt back, throw in a round and drop the bolt again. Either that or try to hold the charging handle back while dropping a round in the ejection port.

If you're using it as a base for a .50BMG rifle, then it doesn't matter and it would be fine for that.

Oh geez :banghead: It's bad enough we have so many gun laws on the books as it is, but to have to have such abortions available to be state legal just makes things worse! :fire:

There are far better platforms for a single shot. NEF handi rifle would be much faster to load, and can be had with an M4 collapsible stock as well.

That thing is one of the worst abominations to come down the pipe yet.

If you purchase a stripped lower in california all you have to do is buy a mag release with an allen wrench screw in it that makes it so you cant drop the mag. This works for ar-15 and ar-10 as they both use the same mag release button. Screw in a ten round mag and it is perfectly legal in our wonderful state of california. Then if you leave ca or in a shtf case you can unscrew it and drop your mags. If anyone in ca has any question about this or want to know somewhere to get the parts to make it legally pm me. And yes all of this is legal. Just as legal as a sks, or welded clip ar. And a lot better then the single shot. To load it you take out the rear takedown pin and load the mag like you would if it was out of the gun.

The mag button will only cost you an extra $17.99 and the 10 round clip if you dont already have it is another $20.00. Which is kind of a bummer because in states that dont strip us of our 2 amendment rights you can get a new GI metal 30 round clip for around $15.00. And the button is easy to put in.

I have yet to fire the su-16. It is made by kel-tec. I have only heard good things about there products. Most off all there small handguns. It is a option if you decide you dont want to go through the hassle of building an AR or dont have the money. It still takes AR type mags. And just like the AR comes in .223/5.56 which will be easy to get when the SHTF. The built in bipod is a good idea. Just dont plan on getting up and grabing for a forend if you havent put the bipod back up, you will burn yourself. And another good thing about the Su-16 is that since it doesnt have all of those bad asault weapon attachments you are able to drop the mag. Which means easier reloads and more firepower to send down range.

Kujo, just so you know, the built in bipod, while an excellent idea, (I always liked that feature on the Steyr Scout,) is next to worthless. Its center of gravity is too high, and it does not lockout.

The faux-1913 fore-end is probably a better option, while the plastitinny rail is not all that stable for optics, the underside of the fore-end is probably fine for a weapon light. A foregrip would be more stable than the built in bipod, but IANAL, so I don't know if the combo of a foregrip and det mag makes for too many evil features.

When I was living in Cali, I would have also gladly forked over the cash for an all metal-receiver, especially one that is easier to clean. The current design makes it impossible to insert a cleaning rod from the breech end of the barrel. Not that you are gonna damage the crown from overcleaning before the barrel is toast anyway, but breech-side access would be nice. (Then again you can still boresnake it with the current design.)

Still, for $600, it makes for a damn good AR-substitute for Cali folks, especially those of us who bought some 30 rounders last century. Kudos to Kel-Tec for giving us this option. Hopefully within the next few years, the Cali-cosmetic ban can be repealed, real Shall-issue can be in every Cali county, and RKBA can become part of Cali law. Till then, for plinking, SHTF, home defense, and camping, the SU-16CA is the best centerfire option, IMO.
