A poll without a bullet for 10mm is like a day without sunshine.

Oh, and thanks, Rabbi. I'll tell my daughters their old fogey dad belongs to, "2) 10mm. More of the same but for young trendy guys." :D

40 S&W Sig Pro. Why didn't the 40 S&W make your list?

Ah, I figured it out. It's the youngest caliber on the list, and the only one that's younger than I am. It's not even old enough to own a handgun that shoots it yet!

grimjaw, Sorry the 40S&W isn't the youngest it would be the 357sig. Another fine cartrage! Perhaps you should stick with older HP ammo too, not GD or HS. Or better yet you might be better off with a 22LR or 25ACP than a 10mm, 40S&W, or 357sig that all never made your list. Your right. let me carry whats best for me. Ta Ta.

Wow, I can't believe how many people actually carry 9mm! I always thought 9mm was widely regarded as a less than effective anti-personnel handgun cartridge.

9MM has been putting people down just about as long as the 45ACP.

I can't have a CCW because I live in Nazi Jersey but if I could I bet a CZ52 with the two rounds of vest busters followed by HPs would be under the front seat of my car. This is all supposition of course, because I am a good little sheeple and would prefer to be murdered rather than defend myself and break the law.

Actually the ancient 9mm x 19 Parabellum predated the modern .45 ACP by six years or so, 1905 to 1911 as I recall.

I note the 9mm is available in lighter, more compact weapons the the .45, which is why I'm learning to shot one. I don't like the micro .45s because of the recoil.

Who prefers a rifle for serious social intercourse, or a shotgun, like my miniature riot gun (for small riots) a handgun is way down the list, but I'd prefer a 1911, not easily concealled in the land of spandex and humidity.

Numbers from combatcarry.com

45 ACP or Colt orGAP 39 46.43%
44 Mag or SPL 0 0%
41 Mag 0 0%
10MM 1 1.19%
40 S&W 11 13.10%
9MM 25 29.76%
357 SIG 1 1.19%
357 MAG 3 3.57%
38 SPL 2 2.38%
380 ACP 0 0%
32 ACP 1 1.19%
Other 1 1.19%

I noticed .45 ACP/Colt/GAP were all thrown in together, which I thought was a little misleading. If you're going to lump together 'calibers starting with 4', why not just throw the whole shebang in?

Numbers for thefiringline.com

.22 LR 1 0.77%
.25 ACP 0 0%
.32 ACP 1 0.77%
.380 ACP 8 6.15%
.38 Special 10 7.69%
9mm 40 30.77%
.357 Magnum 11 8.46%
.357 Sig 2 1.54%
.40 S&W 12 9.23%
.45 ACP 39 30.00%
.44 Magnum 0 0%
Other 5 3.85%
.45 GAP 0 0%
10mm 1 0.77%

Someone was gracious enough to expand my original list of choices, so .40 S&W et al appear there. 9mm and .45 ACP are very close, but if you added up all the 'calibers that start with 4', they win easily. I figured .380 ACP would be low on the list, but I didn't think it would be *that* low. Also thought .38 Special would place higher than .357 Magnum. Shows what I know.

I thought it was more interesting to know the caliber used than the particular gun, and I hadn't seen this poll on here before. I asked for 'primary' because I know some use multiple calibers; one primary and one or more BUG's. If I'd asked for BUG's, I'm sure the numbers would even out a bit. Thanks for all the replies!

A lot of people, including myself, may not be big fans of 9mm but I guarantee that nobody wants to be be shot with it or any of the other "sissy" calibers. That being said I carry a .45 ACP :D

Most often I'll carry a .357 mag (S&W 649); occasionally a 9mm (Glock 17) if my wardrobe permits.

Winter I carry a Browning highpower, summer I carry a FEG PA63. With the way the weather works around here I carry the FEG a lot more so I answered "other".
Put me down for the 9x18 Makarov round.

I'm that joker

It's the only type of pistol I had at the time. I've since upgraded, but I felt it was better to be honest. ;)

There are two simple questions to ask yourself.

1. If you know that you are going to be shot, would you rather be hit with a 9mm or a .45?

2. If you know that you can have one shot to stop him first, would you choose the 9mm or a .45?

Sorry for breaking such an elaborate discussion down to simple terms, but sometimes simple is best. :D
