Call and complain about the Biased NPR Radio Show on DC Ban and Mayor Fenty Interview

Folks, please call and complain about about the Biased NPR Radio Show on DC Ban and Mayor Fenty Interview

The bit was this AM at approx 8:30AM. I heard it on WAMU 88.5 but it was actually an NPR bit. Basically it gave Fenty carte blanche to spew his biased opinion on how successful they have been by keeping guns illegal and how keeping guns from law abiding citizens makes helps cut down on crime.....you know the story...

In a nutshell it was a one sided news bit and caters to the extreme left without representing the other side of the issue.

I called the numbers below and complained about the biased news reporting and mentioned recent studies by the FBI and CDC. How despite the Gun Ban DC maintains the distinction of being #1 in violent crime in the US.

It completely fails to mention the polls conducted by BAL and NBC which indicate that ~88% of the voters support the courts decision to overturn the ban.

I also stated that I would be contacting my representatives to advocate that their funding be cut and/or additional oversight be put in place to guarantee unbiased reporting and content as this is paid for with Taxpayer Dollars.

I urge you to call WAMU and NPR and voice your concerns and opinions.

WAMU 202-885-1200 Option 7 for the News

NPR as per below

(202) 513-2000

Our tax dollars pay for a large portion of their programming and I for one expect fair and unbiased reporting and programming.

You can't really be surprised to learn that Public Radio is completely left wing can you?

That's like calling Hillary Clinton and complaining about her left wing leanings, not likely to have much impact I'm afraid.

Our tax dollars pay for a large portion of their programming and I for one expect fair and unbiased reporting and programming.

You also expect to get value from your tax money? Boy you are not asking for much are you?

(Not making fun of you it's just that this isn't anything new with NPR and they truly don't care. They know they have so many protectors as to be untouchable)

Tex, that is no surprise to anyone but in the 2 minutes it took to post your response you could have called NPR, voiced a complaint to someone and made a statement...taken time out of their day etc.

How 'bout makin' that call to NPR now?

How 'bout makin' that call to NPR now?

Hey I never have a problem with that. I'll do it since you asked, and also know that it won't be the first time I've called them...... :(

I will ask this, what is "WAMU"?

NPR has always had a left-wing editorial bias. I don't have a problem with that, because their reporting of the news is usually even-handed. They seem to make a genuine effort to present all sides of an issue -- most of the time. I feel the same way about them as I do about Fox News on the right. Most news organizations these days don't even make an effort at objectivity. NPR and Fox do.

That is why I was so irrate about this story and took the time to call NPR to let them know how I felt about it. I told them that it was not up to their usual standards and came off as a completely biased opinion piece disguised as news. I let them know that I generally admire their objectivity and wish that they would apply it to the gun debate the way they do to other topics. Even if my call does no good, at least I tried.

While NPR receives bucks from the government, they also get some from private contributions. They would not like to see any of that dry up. One or two calls might not matter, but if they get a bunch of them they may decide to do a second interview with someone on the other side of the question. A flood of messages might help, and they won't hurt.

I read the interview and IMHO it makes the mayor look pretty stupid. I'm sure somebody with a little time can refute his 'statistics'.

Public Radio is completely left wing
Another right-wing myth. Like most, it doesn't pass the reality test, just the faith test.

Is this the only report NPR has done on the DC decision? So they let the mayor answer some skeptical questions about the usefulness of the ban. This is only a biased report if this is the only thing that has been said about the decision. I haven't listened to NPR lately, so I don't know how the reporting has been, but I doubt this is the only report they've had.

Another right-wing myth.
Not hardly.

NPR is 100% anti-gun.

Back in the late '80s or early '90s, they ran a week-long series on gun control.

Their "pro-gun" spokesman was a shotgunner who said he'd never own a handgun and admitted that if he were REALLY pressured to, he'd give up his shotguns.

During the Waco siege, one of their interviewers asked somebody from "Soldier of Fortune" magazine if the Branch Davidians could have NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

When it comes to ANY discussion of gun control, NPR is simply a pathetic, unprofessional joke.

I thought the interviewer was at the very least making Fenty look like a retard.

"But your crime rate is so high. Don't you think some people might want some protection?" was the general gist of one of the questions. The interviewer also asked Fenty at the end "Do you own a gun?" and "Would you ever own a gun?" which Fenty obviously answered no (he has bodyguards, though), which made him look completely biased.

Overall, I think Fenty left with some egg on his face.

Yeah, I'd like to see them get Kopel or Lott on there to shred whatever anti-gunner they have coming in, but it IS NPR. Overall, their coverage of the overturn in DC has been pretty decent for our side.

The thing that disturbed me about today's broadcast, however, was that Fenty said that the ban won't end until the appeals process has run its course. Has an injunction been issued? Can Fenty really get away with ignoring the court, or does he need to be Nagin'ed and found in contempt?

I read the transcript. Sounds okay by me. I think NPR came across fair and asked real questions and This Fenty guy looks like he is whining...

Funny enough, I listened to the same interview this morning, and I didn't think it was that bad. Yes, I wish the interviewer would have called Fenty out on a couple of things, but I thought it was reasonably fair. In particular, consider these questions:

How has it affected the nation's capital to have had this gun ban in effect since 1976, more than 30 years?

...setting the stage...

You've had the ban for more than a generation and it still is one of the more dangerous cities in America.

...showing it to be ineffective...

When you do consider the crime rate, can you blame the six District residents who sued?

...knock 'em down.

"Gee, mayor, you've been doing this for thirty years, and you're still at the top of the murder list. Can you really blame your citizens for wanting to defend themselves?" No, it wasn't that confrontational, but I think this was a pretty even-handed interview. Save the outrage for when they really do shaft us.

I just read the transcript and the interviewer was neutral. It was Fenty who was ranting. Don't yell at NPR. Request that they interview people from the other side.

I'd like to actually listen to the interview. One of the ways NPR's bias shows up is in the tone of its on air people who are for the most part, leftist ideologs (the other is not in how they cover a story, but which stories they choose to cover, or more importantly choose NOT to cover).

Overall, I agree that Fenty came off bad ... but I'm already opposed to his position. I imagine that if one was a gun control supporter, they would see his interview as a triumph of "a sane anti-gun crusader trying to make the streets of DC safer".

EDIT Ooh ... there's a "Listen" button ... after listening I think Fenty comes off even worse. And I really don't hear any bias one way or the other from the interviewer.

Its pretty clear The Mayor is an elitist schmuck that doesn't trust the people.

NPR is another pick-me-up latte for the "inquiring minds" on the Left. Along with the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, and the BBC, it provides all a good, rational, decent liberal needs to know about how awful and uncouth most of "cowboy" America is.

Most of the staffers on NPR are too wispy to even lift a gun, much less shoot one.

were they fair?

Was Hizzoner Fenty (who's no Marion Barry, BTW) the only one interviewed?

If they wanted to produce a balanced report they would have also interviewed Bob Levy (plaintiff & Cato lawyer), or someone to articulately present the logical ruling in counterpoint to Fenty's hysterical diatribes. Otherwise the "report" was just advertisement masked as journalism.

I thought it was a fair interview. The interviewer never agreed with him, and asked him some questions that portrayed how the ban was ineffective. I think some of you are too quick to hate and jump on anything or anyone that doesn't frolic around and share your interests.

I also listen to National Proletariat Radio, and shows like "All things reconsidered long after shown to be fallacious"....

Yes, they mostly give the opposition a chance to speak. But they employ two particular strategies that make them leftist.

First, when someone on the left says something completely over the top, demonstrably false, and non-ignorable, they ignore it.

Second, the left always has the last word. Most of the time the story starts left, veers right for the middle segment, and then goes back to the left - as if to say "Well, we gave it a fair shake, America, and you can see that this is the correct position on this". If anyone can find a story where the conservative view gets the last soundbite, it'd be the first I've ever heard.
