Help!

I have a SA Micro LW (aluminum frame).
The are 2 recoil springs in this beast, smaller inside a larger.
I checked with Wolff, and they advised that the Kimber Ultra springs would work on the Micro.

Question is,though, they indicate 18lb as standard, and also offer a 21lb set.
What would you recommend that I purchase?

This is my carry gun, and it runs flawlessly with 230 WW (practice) and 230 HP. Given the higher slide speeds with the shorter slide, I am unsure of which weight to purchase. I do not want to monkey with something that already runs well, but the recommendation is to change the springs every 500 rounds or so.

I am leaning towards the 21lb set, but I wanted to get your learned opinion.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Jamie

Heavy or Light

My preferences run toward the lighter side...with an EGW firing pin stop cut
to .075 inch radius on the bottom. These little choppers are funny sometimes, and yours may run better with the 21-pound set...but the 18 would make magazine timing less critical.

FWIW, I tried the 21 pounders on my Kimber Ultra CDP II and the stock mag couldn't get a round up fast enough for semiauto firing. (What I had basically was a single-shot repeater, haha.)

I did a Wolff service spring pak on that gun after 3,000 rounds and was very happy with the quality of their springs; just the Government recoil spring had to be discarded and the "micro" spring swapped in. The Wolff pak did seem to increase the trigger pull weight and I never bothered screwing around with the sear spring to try to reduce it because I actually ended up liking a little heavier trigger.

Thanks, guys!

Tuner, I decided to follow your advice, and ordered the 18 lb springs and the EGW firing pin stop.

Hopefully, I'll have the parts in a week or so.

I'll keep you posted. BTW, do you know what radius the EGW has originally?

Thanks again,

Jamie

EGW Stop

The EGW stop is dead square on the bottom and requires a little work there and on the sides. The trick is to keep the radius at less than .100 inch...or light bevel, your choice...and straight across so that it doesn't put uneven loading on the hammer. When fitting the sides, fit to the slide without the extractor in place...then install the extractor and remove material from the right side of the stop until you get a light press-fit. Keep those sides straight and parallel too.

Fitting the EGW stop to the slide is a cakewalk, unless you happen to have a newish Springfield Loaded with an outta spec slide. In this case straight and parallel immediately precede patience out the garage door. One must remove a little material and test fit frequently. This modification is definitely worth the effort and makes a big difference when firing. By all means, go for it.

Hickory-Dickory Nork

Bring me one! I wanna try to start with a LNIB pistol and put it through the wringer to see if I can break it. :p Prob'ly not, but my Colt beaters need a rest anyway...

Ever noticed that there's a LOTTA dang Norks in this area? Everywhere else
all I hear is: "Where can I get a Nork? Oh, WHERE can I get a Nork?" Helle's Belles...ya can't hardly keep from trippin' over the things here! I saw one gun show vendor usin' a snow shovel to pack up the ones he didn't sell. :D

I am in NC for the next 4-5 weeks - Boone today and then working east every few days - and will be going to gun shows and shops as I am not a golfer. It will be indeed interesting to see the frequency aznd prices I find on "Norcs". In AZ you can get a very good one for $225 but they are very rare. In MD they are also very rare and the last 2 I saw went for $425. I look forward to at least 4 weeks of fun.

Tuner Is Just Funnin Us

It ain't that many around. I go to a lot of shows and never found one and then at Raleigh I saw four on diff tables. Two were $399 and they wouldn't come down any, and the other two I bought for a bit less. My first one I bought off a private person at a show earlier this year for $325. There was one at Greensboro priced at $350. I think their popularity in this part of the country is inflating the prices. I'm gonna quit talking about them. :D

And we all know Tuner would just have to tear one apart and start replacing stuff, whether it needed it or not!

Funnin'

Well...Maybe a little. But the things sold like cotton candy at the fair down here before the ban went into effect...and the ones that show up at a dealer don't stay long. Looks like the GI and standard Mil-Specs are gonna do likewise.

Boone! That's where the folks are who had one of my Collies up until a month ago. Due to family crisis, they couldn't keep him, and when they brought him back, I nearly cried when I saw him. Boone is about a 2.5 hour drive from here. Good that it's not 30 minutes...I might decide to go beat somebody with a stick, like they did my dog...and about the only thing that's stopped me is the fact that my back won't tolerate a trip that long.

Purty country up in there, Doc. You'll like it. If time permits, go see Linville Caverns. Worth the time. If ya make it over to the Great Smokies, say hello to Dolly for me...She's usually seen hangin' around Sevierville thru the day,
though she doesn't wear one of her wigs, so probably the only way to recognize her is...is...ummmm...Nevermiiiiind!

Shows in Hickory and Charlotte soon. Gonna be lookin' for Sistema triggers
and maybe an old, old Colt pistole' if I can find one that's both in need of TLC and priced somewhere close inside the Milky Way Galaxy.

Cheeeeeers!

A fit indeed! You are a patient man Mr. Tuner.

Doubt if I’ll make the Charlotte show. Lotta must-do’s here and no time for them. If you see that minty Singer, USS or 1918 (or was that 1919?) I’ve been looking for, go ahead and get ‘em for me, OK ol’ pal?

Every Nork I see around here seems to be inching toward central NC. Everyone says some feller there will buy any and all he sees (but he’s a bear to trade with.)

Tuner, is that dog settling in any better? It’s really a shame to see one messed up like that.

re: 2XS

Happy to report that Elvis J. Dawg is thriving. His appetite is better and he's gaining weight,(up to 65 pounds from 55) and his coat is 200% better than even when you saw him. He's a happy boy and plays well with the smaller dogs...and is completely smitten with the little Sheltie, "Lady Dixi Grace of Rotha." The last hurdle is the face-to-face meeting with his two brothers without benefit of the fence. That'll involve a little of the old pucker factor, and we'll have to have two men to hold leashes, with Kelie standin' by with a bucket of cold water in case they're faster than we are. Big Scoot is the one I'm most concerned with. At 94 pounds and pure Alpha, he's already told El that he's his Huckleberry, just any old time he wants to call it. They all seem to be ready to play, with just an occasional hint of rivalry between the two of'em that could go informal without notice. Scoot is a little unnerving as he doesn't growl or bristle...He just lunges. The only warning is a lowering of his head and a deadpan stare that lasts for about 2 seconds. Typical Collie behavior for the Alpha male. Skip the preliminaries and get straight to the matter at hand.

I'm glad Elvis is doing better, and hope he'll accept people as easliy as he's accepting the other dogs.

The Springlin still hasn't been to the range. Soon I hope. Thanks for the time and effort you put into that one.

re:

Oh, he's completely stupid over us now. Still a little wary of strangers, but it only lasts about 10 minutes. He promises to be a very good dog. I told him no more sticks across his back, and he promised not to rip my throat out...

Brother, go shoot that thing!
