Have you tried a white crayon to raise the maker, if the barrel has a maker on it, a white crayon rubbed on the marking will stick in the writing and make them more legible. Also if disassembled you might be able to find using marking on the tang.
 
sorry useful marking on the tang of the receiver, were the rear bolt fastens to it, it is a common place for the manufacturer to stamp inspection, year or other data, also may be marked with a makers mark like a circle R for Remington.
 
It is not a Marlin 80 or 81. The latter has a tubular magazine. The former has the takedown screw behind the magazine, not ahead of it as that rifle does.

These are some pics of my great great grandpa's Marlin 80DL. Sorry for the poor quality pics. As I posted before I recently replaced the barrel, trigger guard and magazine on it, as they were destroyed over the years. Yours is definitely a Marlin of some sort.

Yes most of your major brand box stores ie., Sears, J.C. Penny, Monkey Wards, all had private label firearms that were made by someone else, and the parts are interchangeable
