Greeting's Folks In SIG World-

My question is, what do you folks in the SIG Nation think of
SIGARMS decision to flood the market with factory refurb SIG's
in 9m/m, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP caliber's. There is a wave of
these factory refurb (police trade-ins), sweeping the country
like wildfire. In our shop we have many of the refurbished
P226's, and P229's right now; and also have a few .45 cal
P220's.

Now, I"m still comitted to SIG-SAUER handguns as MY personal
weapon of choice as a CCW piece; but I'm out spoken about
SIGARMS attempt to decrease the value of our world
class P-series weapons. I realize that not everyone can afford
the high price of a NIB factory SIG; thus the refurb's give them
another option. That is all well and good!

But, suppose you (or I) walked into our favorite shop to trade
a SIG classic P-series; and the owner says something to you
like "Bud, I'm sorry, but I can't put more than about $350 in
your LNIB SIG; cuz the factory refurb's are selling well at $499".

You stop and think for a minute, now here is a weapon that
ranges in price from about $600-$800 NIB (depending on
model and your locale), and you coughed up hard earned
cash to buy it; now this fellow behind the gun sales counter
is telling you that he is only going to allow you $350 towards
a trade, or give you even less for a cash sale! I don't think
so, as I would politely tuck my SIG under my arm and return
home frustrated at SIGARMS of Exeter, New Hampshire. I
would like to hear some feedback, opinions, comments on
this tactic by SIGARMS?

*FootNote- FWIW in our shop, located in Bessemer, AL we sell
ALL factory refurb SIG's for $499.

But, suppose you (or I) walked into our favorite shop to trade a SIG classic P-series;

you know that's not gonna happen....

i think the 499 price is too much for most models, i can buy a new 228 for ~600 ... if i'm gonna cough up 500, why wouldn't i give up the extra 100 for a brand new gun??

but sig is in the business to make money, and this looks like a good way to do that...

Hey, if it puts affordable SIG Sauers in the hands of folks with limited budgets, I'm all for it.

All the factory refurbs we have ordered for customers have all been in outstanding shape, even the Grade II guns.

suppose you (or I) walked into our favorite shop to trade

You'd be asked if you're high on dope
--Told to wait until you sobered up
--Suggest seeking psychiatric consultation
--Offered $200 only, because if you're dumb enough to trade in a P series, you're dumb enough to take advantage of
--Referred to an encounter group
--Referred to an exorcist, because something evil has obviously possessed you
--SLAPPED FREAKIN' SILLY!

I mean, I've seen some pretty far-fetched scenarios posted on THR, but trade in a SIG? What's next? A thread about trading in Pythons for Keltecs???

Duty Tested & Street Proven

To expand a little on my friend Marko's comment.

Yes, all the factory refurb SIG's that our shop has received
have also been in excellent shape mechanically; but
SIGARMS does not refinish any of these weapons so
therefore they show signs of slight holster wear.

FootNote: NO, guys and gals I'm NOT even thinking of
trading in ANY SIG!

Consider that a lesson in never paying retail.
Honestly, I almost never buy new (cars or guns) it just doesn't make sense. Of my Sigs (I have 7 have had 9) I only bought one new (my first).
The flood of refurbished Sigs has lowered the price even more for other used guns and the consumer has benefited.
We who paid more earlier have had more time with them, just like early adopters in electronics. You pay more to have the DVD player before everyone else. Same thing has happened here. I am happy with my Sigs, no matter what I paid for them. Someone gets a better deal now, it isn't going to affect how I think of mine.

Cant really say what it will do besides drivie the market down been thinking of dumping my sig maybe i should

i'm all for it. i just hope i see some refurb P225s somewhere. i'd like to pick up a couple spares for when i wear my 225 out :)

seriously though, it would depend on the condition of, for instance, the barrel. if these are police trade-ins, i imagine the quality would vary substantially. if they're all going for $499, then some are likely to be a deal and others aren't.

if this is true, i'd really like to pick up a cheap one with a poor finish and strip it and put one of the fancy camo jobs on it or something

is what your talking about trading a gun back to a dealer? of course you are not going to get what you should out of it if you take it to a dealer that is like trying to trade in a car you never get what you can unless you sell to a private party.

Very interesting question Dan and one I have been pondering myself.
My situation is that I REALLY want a P229 DAK 9mm. That said if I get
one and like it the way I think I will I will probably want to get rid of my
current P229. Of course I am going to take a loss on it...but now with
the "used" Sigs (which are in VERY good shape) out there I am going
to take a worse loss on it.

In the long run I think the glut of used Sigs will slowly disappear. I trully
think a lot of these Sigs are coming from PD's switching to DAK guns. As
I remember same thing happend with Glocks about 8 years ago. A ton
of used Glocks showed up for a real good price. But the supply of those
slowly disappeared.

I bought and still own my : P220 , P226 , SP2340 and P230 because they are high quality and well functioning guns . I didn't get them so I can pop open my case at the range next to a guy with a Makarov and beater S&W .38 to show off with and look down upon "inferior" pistols nor did I buy them as investments . I've always assumed that they would be pistols I would keep for my lifetime but they are not rare nor are they so far superior to other guns that I should expect them to be worth more than I paid for them : they are mass produced service pieces . I welcome more affordable P's on the market , I'll gladly pick up a couple used 225's as I know that they'll take a beating and still function just fine . If anything , I would say that the cost of SIG's has been artificially high given the numbers in circulation but don't even get me started on 15 year old , shot hard and put away dirty Glocks and what they go for .

Anything that puts quality firearms into the hands of people who may not have had the chance to buy them before is alright by me.

I am not in this to make money and the more guns on the streets in law abiding citizens hands the happier I am.

Now go find somebody to turn them into a new shooter and show them the deal you can get them on the worlds finest handguns.

Besides I may even try out one of them there plasticy SIGs. Just don't tell anybody.:uhoh:

Chris

Why would you even be considering trading in or selling a SIG Ala Dan? :D

I'm not too concerned about it, I like that the price is much more affordable for the same SIG quality. That's why I normally buy used most of the time, refurbs are even better in my eye. I could have never made myself pay normal new retail for my P225(NIB), 2340(NIB), or my wifes P230(like new), not when deals are all around when you look and/or wait.

This also just goes to show using guns as an investment doesn't always work out.

Dan-

I see several reasons why Sig would dump Factory Refurbs into the used market.

1. With the new Homeland Security Contracts DAK pistols are in high gear and new Sig P series pistols are going to be a little less of a priority on the assembly line. THis means less Sigs for the public. So flood the market with used Sigs and keep everyone happy.

2. The factory refurbs that I have seen usually have really crummy wear but the internals are nearly 97-98 pecent with clean bores. Sig is also standing behind each refurb with a factory warranty.

3. The customer gets a used but fine handgun!

I however agree with you that the holster wear on some of these pistols really suck, but if you look hard enough you'll be able to find LEO trade ins for under 5 bills. I picked up a LEO 226 for 399 with the thought of having it worked on and refinished.

This is LEO trade in Sig now :)

Very good reasoning there 45R my friend. :D

I too wish that every handgun fanatic could enjoy a world class
SIG-SAUER classic P-series pistol. That would make me a very
happy camper indeed. Maybe, we might be able to encourage
our friend the silent one to lay down his Kimber and/or
his Springer long enough to SPRING (ha-ha-ha) for a classic
P-series SIG!

By the way, your factory refurbed SIG is one handsome devil.
I know you will enjoy it tremendously! :D And $399 is
a great price, as we offer your choice: P220, P226, P228*,
and P229 for $499.

*FootNote: P228 when we have them.

Greeting's WhoKnowsWho My Friend-

NO SIR! I'm not even contemplating trading or selling any of my
SIG-SAUER classic P-series pistols. No, not now, and not ever.
I merely was making a point, and seeking thoughts/opinions
of our members on the factory refurbed SIG's that seem to
be HOT on the seen.

I don't need to "suppose", 'cause that's almost verbatim what a local dealer told me when I was considering trading in my P226 9mm on another (.45) pistol. No matter that's it's barely a year old and I even originally bought the thing from him...it's a cold, cold retail world out there.

say Dan,

OK, OK, I'm gonna get one. :uhoh: It's gotta be a P 220 though. I can't shoot anything but a .45 cal. :D Ya finally got to me brother.:D I just hope it shoots as well as my Kimbers, or the Springer.:)

SILENT ONE

I've traded S&Ws and a Para (I just had to have a Tac-Four) and taken a great loss on the Para. But I don't mind that loss. It was a lesson learned. I added a P226R to my stable and haven't looked back. As for trading one of my Sigs---no way. The only way I will part with one of them is as a gift to one of my kids.
I'm glad that people are getting good buys on some great guns.

Good to hear! I know if I had to sell or trade off my guns for some reason, the SIGS would be definately last to go if they had to.

I just hope it shoots as well as my Kimbers, or the Springer. SILENT ONE

You will enoy the P220, that was the first firearm I fired, and I easily out shot my friends who were trying to show me how to shoot. :D Though I still haven't picked up one of my own, I have been waiting for a nice used deal I good look at before I buy, though I must admit, CDNN has been calling out to me!

I own two Sigs (220 & 245) and I am authorized to carry both of them by my department. I'm currently carrying the 245 and they are both showing holster wear. But mechanically they're in excellent condition - which is all I care about. IMHO Sigs have never been about looking good, though the 210 is pretty nice, but about working. They're well made strong "duty" handguns.

Don't get me wrong. I like pretty. Which is why I own several S&W N frames a Winchester 1895 and a pre-64 Winchester Model 70. The beautiful guns have their own special place in my safe. My Sigs see more holster time and their down time is spent in a mini safe in my coat closet.

If Sig wants to sell refurbished models for a lower cost I say great. Now more people will come to appreciate my favorite semi-auto pistol.

I'm not worried about the cost of a trade in because I'll never trade in my Sigs. Even when my department completes the transition to the Glock 21 I'll still have my Sigs, they will still go to the range and I will still rely upon them to defend my family and home.

Ever since have personally been buying SIG's there have been a good number of used or Police turn-in guns to be had for $400.00 to $500.00.

A number of years ago one lg. wholesaler told me they have/had certain people/outfits buying even the old ones with their slides worn bald then sending them to Checkmate or some other HC outfit and reselling them as "Two-Tones", etc.

Maybe SIG is trying to have some control over how their name & reputation is represented in the used market by going thru them before some unsuspecting buyer finds out he's been screwed and then thinks SIG's ALL suck?

I think it's great that all these used SIGs are turning up in the market place. I wouldn't think of buying a new SIG. All four of the SIGs I've owned have been used purchases and any future SIG purchases will be a used one.
