For those of you that have painted; camo or otherwise, your rifles with any of the available products out there, I have a question. Does covering steel surfaces such as the barrel and receiver negate the use of having to wipe the surface after use such as one does with, say, a blued firearm? Are these coatings, such as Aluma-Hyde II or Krylon Cammo paints rust resistant and only require cleaning off or drying, or do they require wiping with a rust resistant type coated cloth/CLP/etc. What sort of maintenance do metal surfaces require after they've been covered with these spray on coatings?

Aluma Hyde II is more of a finish than a paint, but even with just plain paint, there isnt much you need do to the gun, except maybe for where the paint is worn away. I've painted a bunch of guns, some of which have had paint on them for over 20 years now, with no problems from rust under the paint. As long as there wasnt rust present when you painted it, I doubt you'll have any problems.

If you have any visible rust on your rifle just make sure you get it off before you paint the gun.

I picked up an old 870 that had been carried a lot but fired very little. The outside was worn. The inside was like new.

I used the krylon camo paint to give it a new life.

Clean the rifle real well with laquer thinner to get all the oil off of what ever you are going to paint. Use the primer. I sanded the wood and hit it with a couple of coats of primer which I sanded between coats just to get it smooth.

You will not have any rust problems with the painted areas. You don't have use any of the rust preventers on the painted areas.
