What works and what doesnt?
I recently got a shooter grade Yugo SKS from Aim and after thorough cleaning and sanding the stock still looks like hell and the grain doesnt look right.Im going to paint it using spray paint and then put a coat of acrylic over that. What methods have you discovered that hold up well? I may go with just a solid color,as a bad camo job looks real bad and im not sure how to get a good pattern on the stock.Any ideas on this?
Thanx

Can't be much help on a camo job, but I built up the comb on an old Mod. 70 stock in order to gain a spot weld with a large scope and had to cover up the wood/epoxy finished product. I first painted with several coats of flat black and then a couple of coats of Minwax Polyurethane clear satin. Have hunted with the rifle at least 4 years and this has proven to be an extremely durable finish.

Regards,
hps

Painting a Rifle or Stock

If you rifle is bedded I would tell you to leave it in the stock to do the paint job .

First off clean your rifle, use alcohol remove any oil /grease.
I use egg crate foam in the auctions I just stuff it in there good, on scopes or any other part that you don't want painted mask them off with masking tape.

Use a primer coat your paint will stick better and last longer either Red or Gray primer.

I choose not to use a flat black paint I have done rifles before and to me it creates a dark spot or spots.

On paints I use Krylon Cammo System spray cans you can pick it up at any Walmart store I use Khaki , Olive drab , and brown & Krylon flat Almond , these paints are tough you get a good non glare finish , if I want to further seal the paint I use Testors Dull coat or Krylon matte finish its at Walmart also . I use either a stencil that has leaves and flowers that you can get at Walmarts toy department for kids or I use natural leafs and twigs , the best result so far is clipping from a evergreen tree . Krylon also sells a cammo pack that comes in a box with stencils .

Once the rifle is ready after the primer coat I paint the whole rifle Khaki or Almond. if you want the Mossy Oak look use the Almond as the base .

Then I get the evergreen clipping and I use the Olive drab I paint the whole rifle using the clippings as I see fit , then I use the brown the same way after I am done if I have any too dark of spots are any paint has ran I go back and use the Khaki with the clippings and paint over it until I am satisfied . you want to go from lighter to darker colors each one is like a layer , there's nothing magic about doing this its just a thing that each time you do it you get better at it believe me ive done a bunch now .

if you don't have a old stock to practice on use a 2x4 a couple of feet long you will see how it all comes together .

I didn't do quite as much work as Target Shooter I just treid to break up the lines of my rifles. I used H.S Camo paint that is supposed to be removable, I haven't tried to remove it. If it gets scratched or marred up I just give it another shot of paint.

targetshooter2---can you get those krylon stencils from wal-mart? if so, which dept are they in?

i've been wanting to paint my savage model 10FP, and i have a compressor and airbrushes, i just didn't know where to get stencils for it.

Excellent jobs by both TS2 and mcj! I hadnt really thought of doing the WHOLE rifle.Looks great though.Doesnt the paint gum up things in terms of functioning? I better plan and think this through before starting.Thanx:)

I've had good success with Testors Military Flats for years. They have a ton of colors in flat, to match any camo you want. It will also come off(with a little work and Hoppes) completely in case you want to change it later. I usually give it three or more coats of clear flat lacquer after I'm done to help even the finish, add to the flat, and help slow down sovents from taking it off. If you leave solvents lay on it, it will come off. Even with this, it stays on well if you watch when you clean. I have a Mossberg shotgun thats been painted over 15 years and though worn and scratched, its still on there and still working. I working on a set of AR furniture in ASAT as I type this.
Here's one in Flectarn:

On the Ar I just shut the the dust cover for the bolt and sprayed away.
The Rem 700 I put a film of oil on the bolt and anywhere I didn't want any paint.
I don't think it would be a good idea to try to spray paint the trigger group.:what:
The scope was easy with the Butler Creek lens covers and the red dot on my Ar was taped over on one end.

Good luck and happy camoing.
