My wife fired her 870 for the first time today. We shot birdshot, low recoil buckshot, and low recoil slugs (in that order). She didn't complain once, and she was shooting pie plate sized groups at 25 yards, standing, all afternoon.
Her gun is set up to be as light as possible (no extension, no light, etc.) the only added weight is a 4 round buttcuff in the back. Recoil didn't bother her at all.
I think that a semi auto would be too heavy for a small woman, and would make sure she handles the gun first. You'd be better off getting a pair of pump guns for the price of the semi auto, then configuring them however you want.
