I have a new Remington 11-87 12 gauge Super Magnum and wonder if anyone can tell me how long the little rubber "O" ring will last. Further, what happens when it breaks? How would you know?

On some guns they last a long time, like thousands and thousands of rounds. Other guns will eat the O-ring in a couple hundred rounds. I've not figured out why the difference is so large.

With 3.5" shells you likely won't know the o-ring is torn or gone, same for heavy 3" loads. It will start failing to cycle with lighter loads if the o-ring is damaged, and that will be your first indication. It won't hurt anything but reliability if the o-ring is damaged.

If I were you I would go down to the hardware store with the new o-ring and match it to one there. This way you pay about 40 cents each instead of $6 or so that Remington charges. The latest Remington rings I have seen look silver in color, some sort of metal impregnated rubber, and they don't last well at all. If you have a good hardware store or a hydraulics shop nearby see if they have viton o-rings. These typically are yellow in color and last better than anything else I have found.

Hope this helps.

On my older 11-87 I believe I have in excess of 20,000 rounds through it and the original O-ring is still in it. Of all the shells I put through it, it only had about a box of 3" maggie numbs shot in it.

My old 20ga 1100 had about 2000 shells through it before it ate the first O-ring, it's had about 10,000 since and still looks good.

Do the hardware thing like HSMITH said, even if they don't hold up as long as originals it's about 30X cheaper than Remington originals.

In addition to how much you shoot, the O rings can be affected by what type of lubricant and cleaning supplies you use. If you use something like Gun Scrubber in the cleaning process, it'll eat the O rings fairly quickly.

When i had my 87 i took off the butplate and carved out a spot for a few spare o rings, just in case.
