I have a 30-06 from savage and it serves as my hunting and target rifle, and I plan n buying a 45-70 , because I like the idea of a certified buffalo gun in the collection and want a decent long range rifle , the is fun to shoot just dont know much about the 338 and what does it provided that the 30-06 does not and what is the 338lapua used for currently?

Expensive to shoot! If you have the big money and alot of time to reload then maybe think about it. It shoots very well with alot of energy out to 1-mile. But again. Expensive to shoot.

.338 lapua has more energy than the .30-06. a lot more recoil and is extremely expensive to buy a rifle chambered for it. ammo is hard to find and very expensive

250 grain fmj bullet at 3000 fps, and a lot more long range retained energy. Military/law enforcement applications as well as long distance target shooting.

Just learned that first part of your article Kimber the other day too, at www.quarry.nildram.co.uk

.338 Lapua was an American design. It started out as a wildcat, basically a .416 Rigby necked down to take the American .338 cal bullets. It was briefly made by Brass Extrusion Laboratories Ltd for a USN sniper project, and was known as the .338 BELL. Then it was finally picked up and made into a proper production cartridge by Lapua, who formally standardised the chambering to international specs.

So it's got some pedigree behind it. I think one site had a chart showing that .338 was actually superior to .50 at very long range stuff.

sorry for my spelling, what is a good and less expensive alternative?

alternative for what? long range target shooting? for that or hunting I'd go with the .300 win mag. If that's not enough for you, you could try a .338 win mag, or go for the big stuff like .416 rigby. (if you wanna go that big you better have a fat wallet and a shoulder made of concrete)

If you cant kill it with a .338 win mag I want to go hunting with you! :)

I did some research on 338LM's history for this article

338 Remington Ultra Mag has almost identical ballistics to 338LM.
