Hey guys, I was hoping to get a little advice on a rifle to pick up for practice. Im not looking for anything too fancy, I just need something that comes with a two stage trigger and has a ghost ring sight setup similar to the M16A2. And preferably in 22lr so I can afford to shoot. Anybody know of one?

New/used 10/22.

Get a set of Tech Sights TSR-100's.

And a two-stage trigger group from, like, Hornet.

Mission accomplished. :)

Then you can add on to it as you go along, upgrade to a nicer barrel or a different stock or whatever tickles your fancy.

You can do this under $250??

The 10/22 and Tech sights sound doable for $250 but wouldn't the 2 stage put you way over.

I think the Hornets are something like $95-150 depending on the unit.

I couldn't say for sure, because I don't see the point of a 2-stage trigger on a .22lr.

But, that's just me.

At least with a 10/22 it's so modular in nature, he can start with the base gun and Tech Sights, and mod it to how he wants it to be as the cash comes in.

But yeah, I would imagine the two-stage trigger would probably put him over a budget of $250; I must've missed that part.

Exactly.

For the price, I think that just ordering a .22LR AR upper to fit the M16 or whatever you are practicing for would work. Then, you'd actually be using the SAME trigger, the SAME ergos, the SAME size and shape.

Note that the picture is with some options. Browse through the options you have.

This does, of course, assume you can swap uppers on your issue gun -- not a modification by any stretch, but I don't know what rules you have to follow.

The two stage trigger really limits things, if you want something more economical you can go with a marlin model 60 for 75 bucks on gunbroker, I think they are more accurate out of box than a ruger 10/22 and you can still put the tech sight on it. So total price is about 150.

I think $250 for a ar type set up with a two stage trigger is a pretty tall order and kind of unnecessary expense for practice. Honestly I think you've got the right idea with using peep style sights for practice and Rapier's suggestion of the Tech sights is right on.

If money is a concern which it almost always is then I say don't worry about getting something similar to an AR in ergonomics or trigger. Just worry about getting some decent trigger time practicing the basics. I'm talking about practicing good sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control, and breathing on each and every shot. You may want to practice getting into good shooting positions with a sling too if your thinking about shooting in matches.

I say just get a decent accurate .22 with a nice trigger and shoot the hell out of it. The 10/22 is a good suggestion and the sr 22 I posted is just a 10/22 with all the AR stuff already installed. You could also go for a Remington 597, they are good too and I think I seen a special in the Sunday adds where Dick's or maybe Bass Pro was selling them for $99 this week. That's pretty hard to beat. Also like other's have noted with these two you can always upgrade as you go and money comes in.

I personally prefer the Marlin Model 60's for a great semi .22lr plinker. They are generally accurate right out of the box and need no aftermarket anything. That's a good thing too because there is not much aftermarket available for it either. That may say something considering they have sold over 11 million of them since 1960(twice as much as the 10/22). Throw some tech sights on top and I think you will be surprised with how accurate you can be with it.

Wow, I just realized why you can't modify "your" AR. Your uncle would probably not appreciate that much huh. I'm guessing by Eastern NC you mean Cherry Point. I was stationed at Yuma for three years and we wasn't allowed to have any firearms on base unless we left them at the armory or out in town at someone Else's place. Now knowing that I think you should go with a magazine fed rifle and practice on a reduced size targets like they do in NRA high power. I would probably try to find some half size dog targets even if you had to make them yourself and shoot them at 100 yds just like when you qual @ 200. Standing, kneeling, sitting. Then practice rapids on same target size sitting. You could reduce the target size again to replicate the 300, and 500 shooting sitting and prone.

Good luck and Merry Christmas

Here are some free reduced range high power targets to download and print on normal sized paper.
