I forget the name, but IIRC, it's 3 letters and begins with a Z.

It's kinda like an earplug, but works on the principle of taking the sound and reflecting it away from the ear, rather than sealing the ear to noise. IIRC, this design nocked off 26 decibels, and allowed regular conversation to be heard.

any help?

Yes, and I'm wondering about the level of noise reduction. Never did get a straight answer about that. But hey, the product is new and the name is cool, so everyone should buy 3 pair.
 
DBR reduction explanation

The reduction is not a straight forward answer like plugs because of the way they work. They are an ear muffler, not a plug. Sounds from human speech and similar frequencies are barely muffled at all, while dangerous frequencies and cancelled out. There is a chart of damaging frequencies in the product info, its as high as 39. Its averaged at 26 because of the low muffling of "friendly" tones.
 
Would not want to test the physics on them with say a 44 mag.

Same here and I feel the same about electronic muffs that amplify low sounds, but block anything over whatever. I always thought I would get a malfunctioning pair that amplified the sound of my .44 or 10mm. :eek:
 
Electronic muffs don't block on frequency, they block on amplitude.

So any LOUD sound gets clipped - basically the microphone and amp shut off. When that goed dead, you are essentially wearing a regular pair of muffs.

The good ones cut off and return very quickly.

I have a pair of good ones - worth every penny and very handy for when you are teaching noobs. Nice to know they will hear your instructions.

There's also the possibility that the batteries would spontaneously increase their voltage and send a surge of electricity from one ear to the other.

They seem to do the same as some german made ones I had, over pressure would force them closed but talking was only slightly impared. They did not easily wear out either. Came in a round blue box and were flesh colored.
 
The Zems do quite well with loud guns.

They are used widely for trap shooting. I use them while shooting my 454 Casull. It doesn't get much louder than a 12 GA. or 454. BTW Mr Highland Ranger, 44 mags are pretty weak. I'd hate to face an Alaskan Grizzly with just that.
 
I've been using these reusable blue wax plugs, with plain cups over them. Pretty effective, even without the cups. With cups, you won't hear very much of anything. Comfortable, too. NRR 34, and I believe it. www.earplugsonline.com

I keep a few in my 22 box, too.
