Can anyone tell me anything about this AK47 at my local shop?

A few weeks ago I decided I was going to pick up an AK. The only one's I've been seen around here are the WASR's at dunhams.

Today my local shop got an AK47 in trade and know they're selling it.

From what I have gathered and seen, it is an Arsenal Las Vegas AK47, 7.62. It has wood furniture. I'm pretty sure it was Russian. It said Saiga on it, which I gather is part of the line that Arsenal in Las Vegas sells. The thing is, I don't see anything with wood grain on Arsenal web site except for the Limited Edition ones. (There could also have been another word on the receiver that might have some significance, I would remember it if someone types it on here).

It's at $499, which I think is a pretty decent deal.

I know I'm being a bit vague, but does anyone possibly have any more information on this model of AK?

Thanks

Are the WASR's conversions just as much as Saiga's are? Are there actually very few "real" ak47's around? (maybe they HAVE to be "converted: to be imported?"

WASR's are Romanian Manufactured (Civilian) Ak Rifles.

A siaga is a Russian manufactured (Civilian) ak that typically leaves the factory as a "sporter"

Arsenal is a US "Assembler" of parts on US made receivers, however they sometimes "Convert" Siaga "Sporters" to the classic ak configuration using US parts for 922r. They have a good reputation for "making" good rifles. It sounds like in this case it is an Arsenal (Nevada I believe) conversion of a Siaga. Therefore, one of the better if not best ak rifle maker (Siaga) converted by one of the better AK modifiers/"makers" in the US.

WASRs are not crap, imo. Just not as polished and may require knowledge of basic tools to hone and fix minor issues; but you pay half or less. Early WASRs had some quality control problems. Siaga Ak's are made by the people and factory that invented them.

Thanks for the info!

I'll go take another look first thing, and if it's what I thought it was I'll probably pick 'er up!

One last question though.... I doubt its the "classic" model, and the only ones I see for sale have synthetic stocks. Did Arsenal used to offer AK's that had wood furniture? Or is it likely one that's just had it's original synthetic stuff swapped?

If I understand it correctly, the Saiga's come here with the synthetic sporter stocks. When they are converted, they typically replace it with wood furnature. It not only makes them look more like a real AK but you have the real Russian craftsmanship.
Don't walk, run to get this gun at that price.

If its in good shape buy it. That's as close to a real AK as your going to get in this country.

Its an imported Siaga which is Russian made and licensed(not an illegal as far as Kalashnikov is concerned copy like the rest), and made in the same factory as the Russian military AKM's. They just divert some for civilian sales. Arsenal does a good job of importing and returning them back to military spec.

I'm not aware of any Arsenal models with wood furniture (although I'm thinking about putting it on my own Arsenal SGL-20). All Arsenals are Saigas, but not all Saigas are Arsenals. Either way, even if the stocks aren't original, it might still be worth it.
