my understanding is that it was legal, and now it's not, but it is going to be legal agian. or maybe it already is? WTH is going on? and is it true that obama signed ccw in parks bill into law?

No, you can't carry yet.

It was put into effect, then stopped by a judge over "environmental concerns", IIRC. Then it was attached as a rider to the credit card legislation, IIRC, but with a delayed start date.

It will be legal in 2010, and, IIRC, February?

It was initially an administrative rules change by the Nat'l Park Service adopted during the late part of last year. It was subsequently blocked by a federal judge after a few groups took the issue to court to stop the rules change.

An amendment to the Credit CARD Act of 2009 (passed earlier this year) added by Sen Tom Coburn made it law that carry would be legal in Nat'l Parks if carry was legal in the state in which the park was located.

The Democrats really wanted the CARD Act so they agreed and it was signed by Obama, essentially nullifying the judges order. It takes effect in early Feb 2010.

Edited to add...there are still some issues to work out. Such as, what if a park is situated in several states? Will carry be legal in federal buildings inside the parks? Maybe a few other things I can't remember.

so in essence, obama did in fact sign a progun bill. we should send him a thank you card. (im not saying he wont try to pull something later, but the more letters of congratz he gets the better)

There are no real issues to work out. The only issues are those created by the media. If it is legal for you to carry the firearm in the manner that you are carrying it outside the national park in that state, then the same is legal inside the park in that state (once the law takes effect Feb 21, 2010). If you cross a state border inside a national park, it is no different than crossing a state border outside the national park - you must abide by the carry laws of the state you are standing in, whether it be inside the park or outside the park.

Buildings inside the National Park which are regularly manned by Federal employees (Park Rangers, etc) are considered Federal facilities and or off limits. If there are no employees regularly in the building then it is not off limits (such as restrooms). If a building is going to be off limits, then it must be posted with a sign in order to comply with 18 USC 930. No sign = no prosectution ability per 18 USC 930.

It it just CCW or also open carry?
Because not everyone packs a Chief's Special. I can see why you might cant to carry a Super Blackhawk in some national parks.
Either way, still sounds like a good thing for gun owners!

I really like this change. When my son and I drove through Yellowstone last summer, he saw the sign that says: "No loaded or assembled firearms allowed in Yellowstone" and looked at me, (keep in mind he's ten at the time) and says, "Dad, if Teddy Roosavelt saw that sign, he'd shoot whoever made it."
Great kid. Dumb rules.

congrats to one father who is doing something right... and raised a son who can...
1. read
2. knows who TR is
3. can logically connect the dots
4. understands that liberal ideas about gun control are mostly stupid
5. has a good sense of humor

Dang if only a senator had the cubes to attach a rider to the health care bill nullifying the GCA '68 and NFA '34!

The area where Utah, Nevada and Arizona touch is very pretty. Glad to stop by Zion NP next year.

Probably want to start with the 89 import ban and then reopen the machine gun registry closed in the 80s.

Well, this makes me feel better. I spent a couple days camping in the Olympic National Forest once and I was certain that at night a mountain lion was gonna come eat me!

Have a lot of NPs on my to-see list, will feel more comfortable checking them off now.

Mountain lions are a concern in the Olympic National Forest.

Since Washington State is a open carry state, you could have had a gun with you with or without a CCW permit. Hopefully, you did.

If you guys didn't see the documentary by Ken Burns on the History Channel, you'd have enjoyed it and would understand why the law of no weapons is in place. Back during the early 20th century, our national parks were overrun by poachers. It was really bad. Park Service Rangers were killed. The US Army was ordered into Yellowstone to protect it. Things were really out of control for a while. Thankfully, today is different and it seems only right to be able to protect one's self and family in national parks.

I have no objection to the change in gun laws in Nat Parks....as someone who spends alot of time out in all different wild areas, sadly I see a need for protection too...from humans. And with greater numbers of people and changing society, the kind of people visiting Nat Parks has changed too ....and not for the better IMO (as an ex-park ranger).

But by no means should this be an excuse for people to push their limits around bears, cougars, moose, etc....it is still your responsibility to stay out of their way. It means going around rattlesnakes and not taking potshots at prairie dogs. You are in their home where they are supposed to be protected.

However if people start shooting wildlife in the parks, I will also be one of the first supporting laws to change it back again. Note: Nat. Parks have different laws and a different purposes from nat. forests, and other public lands.

I feel like im in the twilight zone!

Do you think the guys who murdered park rangers would have stopped if they saw a NO GUNS ALLOWED sign?

Well, there are gangsters, thugs, and other low lifes already killing PEOPLE. Do you want to take guns away from everyone also?
