Can I use 22LR conversion kit to adjust windage only ?

Basically my AR is pulling to the left a little bit and I was wondering if instead of travelling to big open range and using 5.56 ammo, going to a local indoor range instead and using 22LR to try to correct windage as much as possible at 75 feet ? What are your thoughts?

The key to managing accuracy is to reduce the number of possible variables so you can manage them one at a time until you get what you want. I have no idea how many variables your plan will introduce to the problem, but it is LOTS. You will likely learn nothing valuable.

I have shot plenty of 22lr out of the M16A1 and M16A2 using conversion kits while in the Army. The POI was always different with the conversion kits compared to shooting M193 or M855 ball ammo. The M16A2 had a greater difference due to the 1-7 twist.

Using a 22LR conversion might get you close but then again it might not.

Most likely not. I just watched few videos where someone who has a perfectly zeroed AR with scope and 5.56 are hitting almost dead center. When he switched to 22 kit, they start hitting to the right.

It has been along time since I used my conversion kit in my 1-9 twist AR and I don't remember exactly where it shot except it wasn't to point of aim.

I know that elevation would be different for 22 and 5.56 but seems that there is no guarantee that left-right will be about the same either based on some online videos

I have a different upper for my Colt HBAR in .22 LR...so that's out as I understand your question. You want to zero using the same bbl. but with a different bolt/carrier/chamber insert? My guess is that it would be different, maybe radically different.

Removing the bolt/ carrier, then sighting down the bore at 25 yds with the rifle securely clamped in a fixture while adjusting the sights to match what you see through the bbl. will get you close. But actual firing with your intended 5.56mm rounds would be necessary beyond that close in zero. IIRC, the US Army used to zero for 1000 inches (83 feet) to get a fairly good zero for ~300 yds. You could Google that and check the distances...

I have a cmmg conversion. When used w 556 barrel, it is very loose. Pistol range is about maximum useful distance, and not very impressive @ that. I doubt very much you would be able to use it that way. Perhaps w aguila 60 gr., but i have not tried it. There really is not substitute for dailing in w the corret ammo in the correct barrel.

Going to the left? Maybe you are pushing on the buttplate just at trigger release.

A 22lr will print differently from a 223 due to the differences in recoil.

How far off is a "little bit to the left"?

As for adjusting the windage using a different cartridge, I wouldn't count on it at all. I've seen rifles that were zeroed shoot to completely different windages with different bullet weights. Like my Ruger M77 in .308 Winchester. Zeroed right in the middle of a 3-MOA target at 100 yards with a 155 grain HPBT, it'll put 180 grain Hornady Interlocks into a group 3" low and about 1.5" to the right on the same target. My CZ527 in .223 doesn't shift quite so dramatically, but it won't shoot every load into the exact same spot either.

It's been a while since I've spent much time putting groups on paper with my 16" AR carbine. I think I'll rectify that here soon and see if it also shifts windage with different bullet weights.

Just changing bullet weight will change the POI. I have different zero's for my 5.56 AR's when using 62Gr, 69Gr and 75Gr bullets. When testing ammo for my 6ARC build, there was a definite difference between the POI for 103Gr and 108Gr bullets.

And one never gets great accuracy when shooting 22LR ammo through a 1-9 or 1-7 twist 5.56 barrel.
