I am sure this has been covered, and it is just a hypothetical.

I know that under Federal Law a resident of one state must go through an FFL to buy a long gun in another state.

Can a resident of a state buy a long gun in his own state from a resident of another state? (conversely, can a resident of a state take a long gun to another state and sell it to a resident of that state?)

No. Unlicensed individuals may transfer firearms only to residents of their own state or to an FFL in any state. Transfers between residents of different states must go through an FFL.
